Should be good and it's a nice opportunity to spread the word on health care reform to a broader audience!

No doubt, we'll get a few good laughs out of it, too!

5. Where is Letterman these days? Still on one of the major networks?
My package doesn't include ABC,CBS, NBC, etc.

6. Really? You can purchase a cable plan that doesn't include any of the major networks?
I'm curious, what is it called. Never heard of that.

8. Directv satellite. I subscribe to nearly everything else but dropped the networks in 2001 or 2002.
One of them cancelled the only show I was watching at the time (a David Kelley series, I think) and their news devolved totally into a disgusting Bush ass-kissing fest. Even our PBS channel discontinued all programming of value.

We get all the movie channels including 3 Independent film channels, all the showtime and hbo channels, all the minor networks and news stations including MSNBC, both cspan channels, LINK, a couple foreign language channels, and a ton of sports channels we don't ever watch. And we subscribe to netflix. I don't miss the networks.

Otherwise, get everything from DirecTv without local broadcast.

9. "it's a nice opportunity to spread the word on health care reform". Do you mean the
only FIVE PERCENT of Americans will be eligible for the Public Option healthcare reform?

Or the mandated to buy health insurance from one of the Insurance giants healthcare reform?

Oh, sorry. I forgot that these guys are comedians.

18. If you're referring to the FIVE PERCENT (which is the only "statistic" I mentioned), it is
taken directly from President Obama's address to Congress two weeks ago when he said in describing the not-for-profit public option that the CBO had estimated that only FIVE PERCENT of Americans would sign up for it.

26. Which you then lied and said "eligible"
It said they estimated on 5 percent would SIGN UP. Not that only five percent would be eligible to sign up.

28. Lied?. No, I just went from memory of the speech. When msallied asked about the statistic
I googled the text of the speech for my response. Since I did not go to the actual video of the speech the President's wording may be different from the actual prepared text.

The bottom line is the President's proposed "public option" is a pale imitation of insurance reform. That was my point and that is gospel truth.

19. Well, all I can say is ...
Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 12:28 PM by Akoto
As a young American who is bedridden with chronic pain, who can't afford therapies which might make life livable, and who has been fighting for SS benefits for going on two years?

I would be thrilled to fall into that 5%, and damn grateful for whatever help it provides. Right now, I have none.

29. Akoto, I hope you do get medical coverage--free coverage--and soon. The problem
is that the public option as currently outlined is going into effect in something like four years.

I want a broad-based public option that goes into effect right away--not a year or two or three or four down the road. We have Medicare now. You and others could be enrolled in Medicare without having to go through this bureaucratic revamping to make the insurance companies feel secure in their profits.

31. Would that it were so simple.
As I noted in my original post, I am going on my second year of fighting for SS benefits. I'm just going for SSI, not full disability, because I don't have the work credits. Two years.

They rejected me three times on thready reasons, and now I have to wait to go before a judge. The request for that was put in months ago, and we're not expected to receive a date (which could be months+ after) until next year. Getting access to what's present now is by no means simple, even for someone in my condition. The established system is fighting me every step of the way.

32. Have you contacted your Congressman or State Senators? Several times when I had problems
with State or Federal bureaucracy I got quick assistance from my Congressman or Senator simply by making a phone call. Whether your rep or senator is a Dem or Repub doesn't matter. They love to get brownie points helping constituents cut through the bureaucracy.

Given all the attention to healthcare, it would seem that an elected official could benefit from helping you.

I wish you well with this.

23. Um, are you
sure thats what he said? Because I heard him say that an estimated 5% would be USING it, not that it's only open to 5%.

Mr. Obama said the Congressional Budget Office estimates that fewer than 5 percent of Americans would sign up for the option.

http://www.kwtx.com/centraltexasvotes/localheadlines/58495927.html

I wish people would actually post what he says instead of lying about it. Nowhere did he say only 5% would be eligible.

30. You are correct that he said "using" not "eligible". My mistake of going from memory.
I was so pissed at the five percent number that I didn't think to go back and verify the exact quote. I was not lying. It was an honest mistake.

For the record, a public option that only five percent of Americans enroll in would be a disgrace. That's a piss-poor public option and it's a PITIFUL first step for a President who has a huge percentage of the American public behind him on this critical matter. President Obama needs to buck up and start demanding a broad-based, immmediately-implementable public option. We have it now and it's called Medicare.

Unfortunately, he and the rest of the Democratic leadership are more worried about the dollars from the insurance industry than they are the welfare of the American people.

And that ain't no lie.
