Fox: White House fears Giuliani bid in 2012 ( I kid you not!)
Because we all know how dangerously close Giuliani came to winning the Republican primaries back in 2008

http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/09/21/giuliani-bid-in-2012/

The hosts of Fox News’ Fox & Friends have offered up a theory as to why the White House got personally involved in the New York governor’s race and asked Gov. David Paterson not to run again: They believe he would be vulnerable to a challenge by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and a gubernatorial win by Giuliani would set the Republican up for a White House challenge in 2012.

“When you put the name Rudy Giuliani in the mix, you wonder if that’s exactly what they’re worried about,” co-host Gretchen Carlson said. “Because if Giuliani were to run he probably would win a this point, and then that would launch potentially another presidential bid by Rudy Giuliani.”

The New York Times reported Sunday that the White House had asked Paterson, through an intermediary, not to run for re-election. Paterson, who became governor of New York last year after then-Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in a sex scandal, recently garnered a 21-percent approval rating from New Yorkers.

The same poll showed that, in a theoretical match-up, Giuliani would take 60 percent of the vote to Paterson’s 34 percent. However, the poll also shows that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, would beat Giuliani 53 percent to 43 percent. Sixty-seven percent of respondents wanted Cuomo to run, compared to 58 percent for Giuliani.

Carlson also echoed a talking point from GOP Chairman Michael Steele, who on Sunday questioned why the White House would get involved in the New York race when Democratic New Jersey Governor John Corzine’s “numbers are about the same” as Paterson’s.

1. Oh, for a second I thought this was what the White House actually thought.
Then I saw "Fox and Friends" and realized what was really going on.

3. This was being pushed by Fred Dicker...
...the NY Post's Albany columnist. The theory tends to ignore the fact that Rudy has as much a chance of winning the nomination in 2012 as he did last year.

19. Right. His master plan to pin his whole campaign on the key demographic of...
ex New Yorkers living in Florida was insane. Yes, there are lots of them, but there aren't enough in the Republican primary down there to make anybody's campaign. Of course, he was only putting all his eggs in that basket because the other baskets, Iowa and NH, were already full of Huckabee's and Romney's eggs.

15. Rudy is not crazy enough for the Republican base
I used to like Rudy when he was US Attorney, but he has steadily gone downhill since he went into politics. Rudy's behaviour during the last Presidential election was the last straw. Now I cringe just when hearing his name.

27. Lemme get this straight, the 20 percenters hate his guts, he finished dead

last in the Florida Primary, behind Mitt Romney
who the fundies try not to hate too much because
Mitt is a 'shudder' Mormon.

He'd be lucky to get the Governorship of NY and if
he got it he would hang onto it for dear life. Because
right now he's out in the farthest reaches of the
traditional GOP wilderness.

The Birther/Teabaggers hate him more than they hate Obama

29. Corzine's numbers are not, in fact, "about the same" as Paterson's;
they're much better and downright competitive, and improving as we speak.

Paterson's numbers are in the toilet, likely beyond the point of rescue.

If Andrew Cuomo runs for the nomination for that gubernatorial race, my guess is that Rudy will take a hard-bitten look at the field and realize that he would fail in any bid for the governor's post.

A Cuomo announcement of intent would be the last we'd have to worry about Giuliani as an elected official, IMO.

30. Giuliani placed well behind an antiquated crank like John McCain,
a smarmy deep-fried preacher like Mike Huckabee, and a twisted egomaniac like Romney, and this with all the accoutrements of 911 in hand.

Two of those three are likely contenders for the GOP nom in 2012. No reason to think that Giuliani would be any more likely to beat them now than in 2008. A case could be made that he had one real shot and blew it and that no more would be forthcoming.

Were Romney and Huckabee to decline runs, then Giuliani would be in the stronger position if he were NOT a sitting governor than if he were, especially of New York, which tends to be a busy job.

Plus there'd be the small matter of WINNING the gubernatorial race in New York, by no means assured and probably unlikely if Andrew Cuomo is interested in the same job.

Rudy's way behind in the late innings with several key injuries.

32. Didn't Gov Patterson admit to an affair?
I seem to recall that after former Gov Spitzer resigned Patterson promptly admitted to an extra-marital affair. Say what you will the republicans will chomp at the bit to use this against him. I would not be surprised to see Wall Street $$$ support him in the primaries as their worst nightmare would be for Andrew Cuomo be elected.

34. For Giuliani to be a likely contender for the GOP nomination, wouldn't
we be seeing him popping up at chicken dinners and Congressional fund-raisers in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids?

It doesn't seem to me that he's keeping a very high profile.

Cuomo may have been hoping that Paterson would come to the realization that the Democratic nomination is not a sure thing, maybe even a nearly impossible thing, and that bowing out early would be the sensible thing to do. The White House even offered prompting. Paterson said no, he was staying in.

That is all fine and well until he realizes that there is no statewide support for him, no money, no approval ratings from voters, and so forth. Cuomo, if he wants the job, can put Paterson away in the primary and cruise on to election in the general, IMO.

Rudy may be watching to see how the Democrats play this one out. Should Cuomo not run, Rudy could be elected. If Cuomo's in, Rudy's out.
