Rhode Island GOP assemblyman quits party following embarrassment of Wilson’s ‘you lie’ screed.

Ivan Marte, the ex-chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly, has announced that he’s quitting the Republican Party because he was embarrassed by Rep. Joe Wilson’s “you lie” outburst at President Obama:

“I do not want to continue being a member of a party in which the members of the party express themselves in that way,” said Marte, 59, of Cranston. In a phone interview, he called Wilson’s behavior “shameful” and “uncivilized.”

But Marte said Wilson’s outburst was the last straw in a series of disappointments that led him to break with his party.

In a letter to GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione, Marte wrote, “I do hope that my resignation served as a sign, that the Republican Party in this Nation need to reevaluate their position” on reaching out to minority groups.

9. I have to say that there has been a strong drive
to recruit Latinos both by the repubs and the christian coalition in the past ten years. It shocked me how many Latinos around here have gone from Catholic to Evangelicals.

Because my name is a Latino one, I have had so many Evangelicals knocking on my door over the last 8-9 years (especially when I am new to a neighborhood). Imagine their shock when they see me and I tell them I don't believe in organized religion. My kids thought I was being rude until they (and my kids are Latino) were nice to one of the recruiters and then could not get rid of them because of their pushiness. No more, "Mom you could be polite!" :)

5. Good Luck, Ivan Marte, with your former party
recognizing "that the Republican Party in this Nation need to reevaluate their position” on reaching out to minority groups."

But, it may be wake call to other minority members that the gop may not be the par-ty for them.

Thank you so much for taking a stand:patriot:Ivan Marte!

13. Good job....I'm glad he saw the light....
As an aside, I do wish he found someone to take a red pen to his letter. I am no grammar-nazi, but that was a bit painful to read.
