"Why the hell should he give Fox an interview? How dare the NY Times take the president to task...."
New York Times's snide attack reflects US media disillusion with Obama

The Guardian (UK) - Roy Greenslade

You can certainly tell that the media bloom is off President Obama when the New York Times makes a snide attack on him.

In this article yesterday, dealing with Obama's round of five TV interviews on Sunday, the writer noted that he declined to appear on Fox News, remarking:

"That made his star turn look less like a media blitz than Medici vengeance — Fox did not broadcast Mr. Obama's health care speech to Congress on 9 September, so Mr Obama did not speak to Fox News Sunday."

Hang on. Vengeance? This is the channel where broadcasters have attacked Obama variously as a racist, a fascist and a communist while misrepresenting his health care reforms. As one monitor, Media Matters, points out, Fox hosts have also repeatedly compared Obama to Hitler.

So why the hell should he give Fox an interview? How dare the NY Times take the president to task in such circumstances. Isn't this the paper that lectures others on journalistic ethics?

1. If I recall correctly, the FOX network (not FOX News) decided not to carry
Obama's address.

Fuck. FOX.

9. Neither is the NYT.
Eight years of printing Corporate and WH faxes, emails and press releases as "News" and they forgot how to do the job. Disclaimer: I realize it goes much farther back, but the past eight were especially heinous.

Would an advertiser boycott against the NYT or the WaPo be any less valid than that against Glenn Beck and Faux?

And they wonder why people won't pay to read propaganda. I smell another Fed bailout coming up.

16. Fox "News" is not a news organization. If it is, so is the "E Channel"
Obama went on NEWS shows. Fox News is merely a Republican entertainment channel.

5. Is it the NYT or Alessandra Stanley?..who wrote the
article..I don't know her IQ but it's obvious her common sense and powers of observation aren't too keen.

PO doesn't do "vengence", alessandra stanley, but he does do good strategy and if you bothered to pay attention instead of looking for a snide hook you'd be aware.

6. The money quote is in the comment section
The New York Times is being a bit of an idiot for having a go at Obama for not going on Fox. There is no point in Obama going on Fox. Fox is not interested in any discussion, an exchange of views, or a look at the issues; it has its own "Fair & Balanced" approach to life, and stays strictly within its comfort zone, as do its viewers. Standpoint slippage is to be avoided at any cost. An open mind is a liberal, pinko communist mind, liable to be filled with dangerous notions. Obama going on Fox would be like trying to have a meaningful chat with a drunk.

10. Why is FOX entitled to an interview?
Edited on Tue Sep-22-09 11:01 PM by Bjorn Against
A lot of media outlets will never land an interview with any President, just because FOX is a well known outlet does not mean they are automatically entitled to an interview.

I would like to see Obama choose to go on a different type of news show, I would like to see him go on a little known independent station that engages in real journalism. It may seem that there are none of those left but it doesn't have to be an outlet that anybody has heard of, if they can get a YouTube video up then that is all they need to reach the masses. He could bring attention to real journalists and give the corporate media a lesson in how they can get taken seriously, FOX would cry foul that an outlet that no one has heard of got an interview and they didn't but it would give a serious boost to real journalism.

11. Fox News employs more
videotape editors than honest, capable reporters. Roger Ailes would have edited an Obama interview to tell some 180 deg. divergent-from-the-truth story. Fuck. Faux. ALL of it.

14. Fox News is the
misinformation mechanism of the Republican Party and right wing corporate interests. No reasonable person should consent to an interview. Fox should be black balled. The sooner they lose any false patina of credibility the better.

18. Fox "News" is actually entertainment. Well, for some people, anyway.
I wouldn't expect the President to show up to discuss serious matters on the Lifetime Channel or Cartoon Network, either.
