Answering the question "...who's Qadaffi..." = 5 mins

Answering "...why do these people hate Obama so much..." = 3 mins

Making sure she knows the Republicans are the "haters" and telling her the history of the "Southern Strategy" = 7 mins

Life long Democrat after a short conversation = priceless

1. What all is involved in the "Southern Strategy"?
Did you go back to the Dixiecrats or what?

2. The Southern Strategy was Lee Atwater's plan to get Southern Whites,
from *both* parties to vote Republican. It continued with the so-called 'Reagan Democrats,' scaring the beejesus out of the white people with talk of affirmative action, the "Welfare Queen," the drug war, etc.

.... 'cause you KNOW I was about to go off on the implication that the hatred toward the President is a regionalized thing.

People down here cant even WORK a magic marker, (they'd try to eat it) much less make a whole sign. ;)

But good work! There are wise old words that say, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and he will not depart from it."

4. It goes back even before Reagan to Nixon:
I remember seeing an interview w/ Kevin Phillips where he talked about it in some detail.

"Although the phrase "Southern strategy" is often attributed to Richard Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips, he did not originate it,<1> but merely popularized it.<2> In an interview included in a 1970 New York Times article, he touched on its essence:

From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local "Democrats.<3>

8. Yes, and LBJ rightly predicted that after he signed civil rights legislation
the South would forever be lost to Republicans. Boy was he right!

5. Making sure she knew it was Ken Mehlman who appologized for the GOP use of it in her generation
...and she was taken back a little.

It's hard to vote for people who think tactics like that are benign....
