Bipartisan Greybeards Unite To Praise New Security Council Nuke Resolution
By Spencer Ackerman 9/24/09 11:44 AM

For the last two years, an unlikely bipartisan coterie of Cold Warriors have banded together to pursue the ambitious goal of deep nuclear-weapons reductions by the United States and a comprehensive international regime for nonproliferation. The goals of the crew — former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger; former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.); former Secretary of Defense William Perry; and former Secretary of State George Schultz — have been embraced by President Obama, and so now the four greybeards release a statement through the White House hailing this morning’s adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1887, which establishes the basis for beefing up the global nonprofileration regime. The statement:

The Summit in the UN Security Council brings much-needed global focus to the risks posed by the spread of nuclear weapons, nuclear know-how and nuclear material. By convening heads of state, the meeting can help build the necessary political will around the urgent steps required to reduce nuclear dangers.

The four of us have come together in a nonpartisan effort, deeply committed to building support for a global effort to reduce reliance on nuclear weapons, to prevent their spread into potentially dangerous hands, and ultimately to end them as a threat to the world. We remain committed to working toward this vision and advancing the steps essential to achieve this goal. We welcome the leadership of the U.S. administration in this effort.
