Pres. Obama was correct when he said we are NOT just a Christian nation
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 04:10 PM by saracat
He said "we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

And now , everyone from the Tallahassee Cheerleaders to various groups is Florida have decided to attack him for it months after he said it. These idiots, yes, idiots are folks who refuse to even admit the principle of separation of church and state exists. They refuse to even make a cursory study of "real " history. They know nothing about the Deists and the Jefferson Bible.
This isn't even about religion, it is about "control" and it is going to get worse. This election did not suppress these folks. They are back and with a vengeance.

The same people are behind the anti- Gay Marriage initiatives and the Pro-Life Anti-Birth control movements. They support guns in our schools. The worst part is that many on our side do not see them as a threat. Some of our folks even think that some of their arguments have "merit". We must be vigilant. This is a power grab and they are massing.

Many of us have our differences , but we must all work together to make sure these zealots do not "take the country back", and we mus fight the enemy, for that is what they are anywhere they are to be found. We must speak out against the tyranny they would inflict upon us all.

2. They are the most dangerous people in this country. They are the Taliban of the US.
They would have America become not just a "Christian" nation (whatever the hell that means), but a theocratic dictatorship under the control of rightwing dispensationalist rapture-ready hate-filled violence-prone anti-democratic anti-poor anti-anything-that-isn't-white xenophobic isolationist armageddon-wanting inbred evil fucks.

9. They are only dangerous because of their numbers.
Islam would be the same or worse if it were the majority.

3. Actually, that's not what he said. He said
I think that where -- where there's the most promise of building stronger U.S.-Turkish relations is in the recognition that Turkey and the United States can build a model partnership in which a predominantly Christian nation and a predominantly Muslim nation, a Western nation and a nation that straddles two continents -- that we can create a modern international community that is respectful, that is secure, that is prosperous; that there are not tensions, inevitable tensions, between cultures, which I think is extraordinarily important.

That's something that's very important to me. And I've said before that one of the great strengths of the United States is -- although as I mentioned, we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.

6. Every time someone labels the USA a christian nation they need to be slapped down hard.
1) If the USA is a Christian nation then the Bible would had been made the Constitution or at the very least a reference to the Bible would had been included.

2) The Constitution would had required everyone to attend a Christian church.

3) The Constitution would had required everyone to tithe to a Christian church.

4) There would had been a requirement that only a practicing Christian could be President, in Congress or in the Judiciary.

5) If the founding of the USA was based on religion then why is there no mention of it as the reason that the colonies revolted against Great Britain?

8. Yes, Pres Obama was correct. I thank him for saying it. I wish he included atheists too.
I understand why he didn't; no President would have (they will in the future though).
