Pelosi whips as Obama leans
This is bad news--as it appears a robust option is NOT viable in the HOUSE!!

Pelosi whips as Obama leans

Pelosi whips as Obama leans
Nancy Pelosi determined last night that there are NOT the votes for a 'robust public option.' AP Close

House Democratic sources say Speaker Nancy Pelosi determined last night that there are NOT the votes for a "robust public option," ...

... meaning the speaker will likely move to one of the two other, weaker public options being considered. "Votes aren't there," a top official said. "The progressives are always more optimistic than reality." But the speaker knows how to count real votes to find out the truth, and she wants to release a bill that will get at least 218 votes. Aides say the count was somewhat of a surprise, but not completely. It's a bit of a disappointment, but could help House members in conservative districts. The speaker plans to roll out the House bill with a big ceremony on the West Front. It was planned for Tuesday or Wednesday, and may still happen then. But last night's tally could delay the timeline a bit. Read more in POLITICO Pulse.

Obama, meanwhile, may be leaning toward a trigger-based public option plan, POLITICO's Carrie Budoff Brown reports.

House 12-15 Votes Short on Medicare Plus 5 Public Option

The House Democratic leadership is meeting this morning to determine what version of the public option goes into the House bill--negotiated rates or the stronger Medicare Plus 5 formula. The most recent reports are that they are only 12-15 votes away from the strongest version of the bill, the Medicare Plus 5 version that ties public option rates to Medicare reimbursement rates. Having the strongest possible House bill going in to conference with the Senate is critical, and it's within reach.

Chris has whittled down the list of those leaning yes, the undecided, and those leaning no. Obviously the key targets are those in the first two categories. If these members are your representatives, please call and ask them to support the Medicare Plus 5 public option.

Lean Yes:

There's LOT'S of shit flying in every direction, so what? 12-15 votes is not a big deal especially when 12 of those congress people are already LEANING YES.

3. Not necessarily. It was already denied by the House leadership.
Note all the anonymous sources. It may be pure manipulation to get people to think there is no option,

Take your phone and call.

Thanks. This is what is needed. This is a war and we are actors in this war, not the audience.

5. Politico is ruining the Internet.
I have a pet theory that Politico also has a DU disruption/troll team on staff.

7. This is Politico - nothing but an unsubstantiated Beltway Rumor.
My guess is that one of the Blue Dogs wants to make trouble, get more tasty pork for his district, so he's spreading this shit around to make it look like the bill's in more trouble than it really is.

And of course, Politico would never compromise their journalistic integrity by taking these Beltway rumors seriously and spreading them around. No sirree...

9. I simply don't trust Politico's reporting here
There are too many ways in which "leaks" are used to manipulate, assuming they are real to begin with. Having said that I see no reason why only Congress should be hearing from us at this stage. There is no harm done in also making calls to the White House to register our views on "the trigger" and other aspects of Health Care Reform.

12. Progressives are only more optimistic than the dunces in Congress.
Morons in Congress who are afraid voters will "punish" them if they support real reform are the dunces.

Jiminy Cricket. Isn't it the job of leadership to occasionally make difficult choices and c convince the voters of the reasons for it?

Politicians are never going to convince the 1/3 of the country who are hardcore rightwingers of the merits of a public option. Those same people are never going to vote for a Democrat, no matter how he or she votes on a public option.

If a politician can't convince the segment who are on the fence, then they should be doing something else to make a living.

I have some difficulty believing that the House is more hostile to a public option than the Senate.
