Tom Harkin, Led Zeppelin freak?
Through the whole primary, it seems every time there's a Tom Harkin event on C-span, it features "When the levee breaks" in the background. Which is both cool, and at the same time a little odd when the dems are mingling with voters, with Robert Plant's wailing in the background.

Now, at his announcement of his Dean endorsement, he was playing some hip hop song that sampled "Kashmir," which is cool and also odd due to developments with India and Pakistan.

So what's up with Harkin and Led Zeppelin?

2. I watched a Kerry event on C-Span last June...
...and they played "When the Levee Breaks" at the end of that too. At a Dean event I was at, they played stuff like Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow.

4. LOL Kerry was pandering to Harkin!
That's Harkin's song, he plays it at all his events!

I'm kidding, really, but that cracked me up.

7. Glad to hear that
wouldn't want Drudge to report that Kerry is stealing Harkin's song.

The Dean events I go to either play that annoying "We Can" song (it's growing on me, but it's been a long slow grow), or generic classic rock. Heard U2 "Beautiful Day" at the Bradley endorsement actually.

I think the campaign needs to hire me as music consultant. :)

3. Cool song...
If Harkin really wants to impress voters he should get them (or some of them) to do a boot Bush benefit concert. I think Plant was educated at Cambridge(?) in history or something so maybe he's sympathetic.

BTW, I'm listening to How the West was Won right now (picked it up on the way home from work). I've already admitted this indiscretion to my wife. She's o.k. with it. Gawd I'm lucky.

5. I heard an interview with Plant on NPR
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 11:49 PM by Cocoa
a couple of weeks ago. Talking about a music festival he was at in Mali, with musicians from all over the Sahara. It was very cool, he has to be pushing 60 and was talking about music as enthusiastically as a teenager, talking about the links between African music and the blues.

He allegedly has some explaining to do, I don't know if he has addressed it, maybe he has, for Led Zeppelin's basically stealing blues musicians work, but I loved the interview at any rate.

edit: added "allegedly"

8. I was looking at the liner notes
for HTWWW and its listing names like Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker so hopefully some of the $ I just forked over is going to their estates!
