40 million Americans saw that debate. No spin can change the truth.
Any and all lurking freeps waiting for the chance to burst the balloon here tonight can go find a sandpile and pound it. "I'm so disappointed" or "Kery blew it" or whatever...it just makes me laugh.

We saw an absolute truth tonight.

Kerry did exactly what he had to do.
Now people will see him as decisive, and not some limp wristed flip-flopper. That was huge. He was (putting even the best spin on Bush*s showing) more than equal to the pResident.

A+ for Senator Kerry!

9. Kerry was good

But I was truly amazed at the level of Bush’s incompetence. His ability to consistently stammer for 90 minutes, to drink excessive amounts of water, to nervously blink, to impatiently await his turn, to repeat the same tired cliché’s ad nauseum was amazing.

Folks, we are witnessing genius.

11. I hate to point this out, but that's EXACTLY what happened in 2000
So many DU'ers suffer from a chronic case of short-term memory loss.

OF COURSE its possible to change the truth. Are DU'ers really THAT naive? Compare poll taken immediately after the first Gore-Bush debate with those taken a few days later.

this one. I think yours is the short-term memory. The two performances couldn't have been any different. This whole debate was *about Bush* because he's the President and has a record he has to defend.

Night and day.

16. Some on our side never learn, the American people believe what is repeated
As long as something is repeated enough times many, maybe most, of the American people will believe it.

It doesn't matter where it is repeated, TV, radio, advertisements, direct mail, anything, it just needs to be repeated enough times and it becomes the truth to people.

If the media chooses to repeat the lie that Bush won the debates, then for many people he did. That's why we need our own method for repeating things to the American people. Air America is a great start, but we need many more methods to get through the right wing control of the media.

As Scoop Jackson used to say, I'm a liberal, not a damn fool. And a lot of DU'ers are acting pretty damn foolish right now. Do I think Kerry won the debate? Sure. But am I so naive to believe that spin doesn't have any effect? Like I said, I'm not a damn fool.

26. Make sure you hit all of the polls linked - it is small, but we need every
...bit of help we can get.

Even though most people might never see the online polls, and they aren't scientific, if Kerry wins in every online post-debate poll it can't hurt him in the media.

The process to get more of a voice in the media will take many years, but we need to win this election in a few weeks, so we need to try everything we can.

Contact the media, vote in the polls, send money, whatever we can do to try to make this a victory. :)

23. Gore did win that debate. But Kerry DEVASTATINGLY SLAUGHTERED
Bu$h.

No amount of spin is going to change this one.

Like Willie Nelson said after his wife caught him in bed with another woman:

"Are you going to believe what you see, or are you going to believe what I tell you?"

We all just witnessed John Kerry inflict a very brutal verbal and visual mangling of Bu$h.

The only people who are going to listen to lying RW talking heads spin this are dittoheads that did not witness the carnage.

30. Not according to CNN
The talking heads on Larry King are split. Richards thinks Kerry won. Weld thinks Bush won. Gergen says nobody won. The guy from Newsweek says Kerry won on style, but Bush won on substance. The Latino guess is still pissed that there wasn't a question about Cuba.

In addition, CNN keeps alternating sound bytes, and some of Bush's sound pretty effective in isolation.

42. Then, IMO, they are destroying what little credibility they had.
I watched with one Dem and one undecided tonight.

We all laughed our asses off at Bu$h.

Undecided is no longer undecided, and the American people, I'll grant you, are not the brightest candles in the hallway, but only damn fools could let themselves be persuaded by a bunch of talking heads that Bu$h won this debate.

And these CNN RW talking heads are apparently really laying some insults on the intelligence of the American people if what you say is true.

18. Not so fast.
Sure, the other side threw in the towel. But we have people here who want to throw it back to them because Kerry shouldn't have just won by knockout, he should have killed Bush, and then started in on his family. Anything less is evidence of what an awful candidate Kerry is. If ******* had been in the debate instead of Kerry, ******* would have said (fill in with some ridiculous, over the top attack), and Bush would have dropped dead on the spot.

I can't believe how much worse he did tonight, and have two hypotheses. One, since he's never been confronted and attacked the way he was, he couldn't handle the pressure. The other possibility is that he is indeed suffering some mental deterioration.

Thoughts?

Bush Team Prepares Net Assault
02:00 AM Sep. 30, 2004 PT

For the millions of television viewers who tune in to the first presidential debate in Miami Thursday night, the event will probably seem scripted, familiar and maybe even cordial. And for good reason. The Republican and Democratic parties worked out detailed ground rules, all but promising that the televised debates will be uneventful.

But both campaigns plan to take off their gloves on the internet. In some respects, the real debate, or a better semblance of one, will take place in cyberspace.

46. 40 million Americans saw that the flip-flop argument has no substance
Bush repeated a mantra several times about Kerry being someone who has changed his position over and over. Kerry met every challenge to that argument. Bush could come up with NOT ONE SINGLE CONCRETE EXAMPLE of Kerry flip-flopping but had to be content to repeat over-and-over that empty line in the abstract.
