3. Gaffe alert
In Iraq, no doubt about it, it's tough. It's hard work. It's incredibly hard. You know why? Because an enemy realizes the stakes. The enemy understands a free Iraq will be a major defeat in their ideology of hatred. That's why they're fighting so vociferously.

I thought I heard Whistle Ass use "vociferously" incorrectly.

It's about how you speak -- vox or voice is the root. I think he meant vicious

and slate.com officially named it a Bushism, I maintain that it's purple prose. "They" could be fighting vociferously, vehemently, and vigilantly. In other words, * reads Maureen Dowd.

correction: has Maureen Dowd read to him.

4. My two most interesting clips... Oil & The Draft
KERRY: And I think a critical component of success in Iraq is being able to convince the Iraqis and the Arab world that the United States doesn't have long-term designs on it.

As I understand it, we're building some 14 military bases there now, and some people say they've got a rather permanent concept to them.

When you guard the oil ministry, but you don't guard the nuclear facilities, the message to a lot of people is maybe, "Wow, maybe they're interested in our oil."

Now, the problem is that they didn't think these things through properly. And these are the things you have to think through.

******

kerry sort of mentions in passing something much bigger and more important..

*******

BUSH: Thank you very much tonight, Jim. Senator.

If America shows uncertainty or weakness in this decade, the world will drift toward tragedy. That's not going to happen, so long as I'm your president.

The next four years we will continue to strengthen our homeland defenses. We will strengthen our intelligence-gathering services. We will reform our military. The military will be an all-volunteer army.

****

Bush rules out the draft without even being asked about it...

5. A leash?
KERRY: Well, first of all, I appreciate enormously the personal comments the president just made. And I share them with him. I think only if you're doing this -- and he's done it more than I have in terms of the presidency -- can you begin to get a sense of what it means to your families. And it's tough. And so I acknowledge that his daughters -- I've watched them.

KERRY: I've chuckled a few times at some of their comments.

(LAUGHTER)

And...

BUSH: I'm trying to put a leash on them.

(LAUGHTER)

KERRY: Well, I know. I've learned not to do that.

11. BUSH: "I work with Director Mueller of the FBI
; comes in my office when I'm in Washington every morning, talking about how to protect us".

WHEN YOU'RE IN WASHINGTON???? You spend half your fucking time at your ranch. The same place where you overlooked that memo about Osama wanting to attack us right here in America.

12. The transcript should be helpful
for those of us writing LTTE. Our letters will be one of the most important factors in how the public will digest and process the debate.

Bush appears to be trying to convince the public that if we vote him out of office, we don't support our "home team." Baloney. If you are in the seventh game of the World Series, and your pitcher gives up four runs in the second inning, you take him out because you do support your team. The war in the Middle East is obviously far more serious than a championship baseball game, and it's urgent that we remove Bush in November.

20. Please do!
Here's a couple quotes of some potential value to DUers who are composing LTTEs.

(1) "In September 1993 Rove wrote a memo urging the campaign to 'limit GWB's appearance .... to reduce the attention of the Capitol press corps.' This is the first known instance of Rove's preference for not letting Bush loose in any unstructured situations and for keeping him away from the press."
- "Shrub"; Molly Ivans; page 52
*** -I guess we have a clear picture why Karl wants to keep GWB away from anything so free-wheeling and unstructured as a conversation!

(2)"I'm the commander -- see, I don't need to explain -- I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation."
- George W. Bush, quoted in "Bush at War," by Bob Woodward

It has become apparent that George couldn't explain why he says things, even if he tried. But I think we would agree that we need to explain things to President Bush. And what we need to explain is that we believe voting him out of office is our patriotic duty. We are doing it because we support the American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. We're voting him out of office, because we respect the Constitution and believe in the Bill of Rights, and we are convinced he doesn't have the ability to grasp the true meaning of these documents.

Bush gave us the ability to bring the message of truth to the "undecided" voters who will actually decide this election. More: no democrat who watched the debate is thinking, "Dang! I may have to change my mind, after all!" But a lot of republicans likely are.

18. OK, here's my "best of"

We're facing a group of folks who have such hatred in their heart, they'll strike anywhere, with any means.

Of course we're after Saddam Hussein -- I mean bin Laden. He's isolated. Seventy-five percent of his people have been brought to justice. The killer -- the mastermind of the September 11th attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, is in prison.

 We're modernizing our borders.

And there's going to be an Arab summit, of the neighborhood countries.

Well, actually he forgot Poland

My opponent just said something amazing. He said Osama bin Laden uses the invasion of Iraq as an excuse to spread hatred for America. Osama bin Laden isn't going to determine how we defend ourselves.

You know, it's hard work to try to love her as best as I can, knowing full well that the decision I made caused her loved one to be in harm's way.

But the enemy attacked us, Jim, and I have a solemn duty to protect the American people, to do everything I can to protect us.

First of all, of course I know Osama bin Laden attacked us. I know that.

: I'm trying to put a leash on them.
