Did the "no reaction shot" camera work show how pissed off Bush was?
I watched it on Cspan on their fabulously revealing split screen and was amazed at how awful, pissed off and just plain pissy Bush looked throughout. Then I switched to PBS for a moment and remembered that they'd forbidden reaction shots. Did you get any of the same visual information watching the networks or the cable channels? Seems to me it must have been muted, somewhat. Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything else.

2. I saw plenty of reaction shots on CBS.....
I was pleasantly surprised to see them because the chimp looked like a fucking numbskull. He looked like he wanted to jump out of his skin.

He is so toast!

CBS showed a split screen pretty often
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 11:30 PM by high density
Bush was often shown looking like he was ready to beat up Kerry (or worse) while Kerry was usually just looking down and scribbling notes on paper.

The news networks decided that the agreement signed by the candidates didn't apply to them and they ignored the rule about reaction shots. I think the whole controversy probably meant that more reaction shots were shown, which was obviously not a good thing for Bush tonight.

3. Switch back and forth between CSPAN and other networks
Bush looked a hell of alot better on the big screen than he did on the split screen.

Kudos to CSPAN for showing us what reality looked like.

4. CBS kept going to split screen, and it seemed every time they did
shrub was wicked pissed off. Funnier than hell.
I've got to tell you folks, it's going to be tough for Karl Rove to spin this debate into even a draw for Bush.
"All hat no cattle" didn't bring any cattle to the first debate, and John Kerry stole his stupid hat and stomped on it. :D

5. Split screen on NBC...
...they kept adjusting the view so the tops of their heads were the same height... by the time they evened everything out, Shrub looked like he was sitting in a high-chair!

6. ABC showed the real truth...oooops....the split screen and
it seemed to me that as the night went on Bush seemed to shrink and cling to the podium more.

7. Camera work
Did you notice how the cameras made Bush look bigger? They shot him closer so he looked as tall as Kerry. Petty!

8. on CNN...
....they just said that reporters didn't see the split screen; they saw the other feed. Which is WAY too bad. Because seeing Bush's fear, paranoia and anger made a huge difference.

9. I watched NBC
and they had the split screen on most of the time.

Bush did not look good at all. HE looked like a snarkly little boy who wasn't going to get dessert tonight.

10. I am so GLAD they "broke" the rules!
Kerry won the debate in a side by side screening even with the sound turned OFF! Cspan kept trying to even up the heads, too, but it was so obvious (they kept moving Kerry's shot down) that I think it just reminded us all of how much taller he is.

11. I thought * came off looking like
a prissy old time school marm every time he pursed his lips. I had to wonder if the monkey picked up the look from Karen Hughes accidentally, or if was intentional debate training.

12. Anyone else notice on CSPAN
They had Bush taking up slightly more than half the screen on the split screen. It was subtle, but it looked like about 9/16 to 7/16. At least, that's how it looked on the Jumbotron at Miami Arena. It may not have been noticeable at home.
