Serious Al Gore/GWB Debate Question.... |
|
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 12:58 AM by SeekingTruth
Kerry did wonderful tonight in 99 percent of the debate (he could have hammered the FBI point better and harder - where they don't have enough translators and he missed the chance to confront Bush when Bush said that 100 plus Iraqis have been trained - the report out of Iraq is that it is closer to 50k if that)....
but here is what worries me - we only have one debate finished, but in rating Bush's performance, does anyone believe he was the same tonight as he was in 2000?
I think he was about the same. (Though every pundit and news source is more or less saying Bush lost).

1. He looked much better in 2000 |
|
And Gore came into the debates with a big boost from the DNC, so expectations were different.

was near as quick on his feet tonight as he seemed to be in 2000. he seemed to fumble a lot more. I seriously think he is losing the capacity to think on his own. It could be the effect of the Dry Drunk Syndrome that is spoken of so often.

5. No comparison. Here's the differences... |
|
1. Gore "won" the debate on substance, but lost on style. Tonight, Bush lost on both style and substance. He looked bored, which for someone accused of not paying attention and listening to other opinions is as deadly as sighing was for someone accused of condescension.
2. Bush had very limited expectations in 2000. Now he's trying to recapture the magic he had in late 2001, and that requires several things that just aren't going to happen.
3. Bush has been in a vacuum for several months. The fact that he's been able to isolate himself makes him actually think if he just repeats his stump lines, people will believe him. Works for pre-selected crowds, not for debates.
4. Kerry doesn't make his foibles and shortcomings the stuff of public comment, like Al Gore (see Goldilocks and the just right bed) did.
5. This is the antithesis of the "Seinfeld" election about nothing. Wisecracks don't win the night like they did in 2000.
