Experts Rate Debate A Draw
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 06:20 AM by Jon8503
Bullshit.

There was no clear winner in Thursday night's first presidential debate, according to interviews with experts across the country.

"It’s more relevant to talk about the winner in terms of expectations," said Shanto Iyengar, a professor of American politics at Stanford University. "Given the fact that this was President Bush’s home turf -- national security and terrorism -- he should have dominated. He didn’t. It’s a positive outcome for Kerry."

Yet winners in debates are determined not in the minutes following, but in the 24 to 48 hours to come.

"Anyone who declares a winner in this debate is a predictable partisan. They both did beautiful," said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.

"I don't view this as a tie," he continued. "I view this as a superb dual presentation that presented the American people with a clear choice and that's really all you can expect from these television extravaganza."

3. Kerry WAS presidential
but what is this drivel about Bush having command of facts? The only thing he remembered were his talking points, and he flubbed them as he tried to make them fit every answer.

5. he WAS in command of the facts
relative to how much in command of the facts he was 4 years ago.

but he was unbelievably ignorant of his own record after 4 years, mainly because he has no interest in what his administration is actually doing.

13. Command of facts: that's the advantage of low expectations.
Right when you're convinced he's a neanderthal, Bush drops a four syllable word and that tells you that he just might understand all the technical gobbly-gook that his advisers feed him every day. Except, of course, one wonders if he could sustain that higher level of conversation for long.

10. Anybody who watched last night and didn't clearly see that Kerry
dominated from beginning to end is a partisan. I would say it if Kerry didn't do well. But Kerry did superb. Bush had to search for words and kept repeating the same things over and over.

25. But that is exactly Bush*'s technique
If you have ever watched any of his debates from the past you would notice that is how he stays in the frey. He is very disciplined and always stays on topic. We say he keeps repeating himself but that is the plan. Drive the point home time and time again and don't get sidetracked. He did that very well again last night. He only talked about Kerry's indecisiveness and his (Bush*'s) determination. Over and over and over again. That is Bush*'s style and he excels at it. I think Kerry won but I can see how some will call it a tie.

Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 09:20 AM by spooky3
from what I can see. Stanford is one of the most politically conservative institutions in the country, despite its being near San Francisco.

Let's take a look at their other "experts". Brookings Institution is centrist, while the AEI is decidedly right wing.

Galston was an adviser to Clinton. A quick look-up of his academic creditials suggests that he is not a top researcher--he's spent an awful lot of time being a talking head in recent years. That's not to say that he isn't good at what he does; maybe others of you know more about him.

In any case, we have three right-leaning "experts", two likely centrists, and no lefties in the mix.

Had experts representing the true range of political views been consulted, I think this story would be quite different.

26. I'm glad that 55 million people watched
That's a lot of people who know the truth about who won the debate.

All the GOP is doing is creating cognitive dissonance. What idiots.

I'm so glad that Kerry won. If Kerry would have performed as poorly as Bush did last night I would be crying this morning.

But as we all know, Bush just sucked.

In all honesty, Bush has been a capable debater up until last night. In his old debates airing on C-Span, Bush seemed to be more in control. I don't know what has happened to him.

Although I love Al Gore and would have loved him as our president, Bush last night reminded me of the "sighing" Al Gore of four years ago. It was weird.

I bet Karl is caning him this morning at the White House, Crawford, or wherever Mr. Smirk is hiding out today. Bush will go running back to his loyalty-oath bubble.

28. We predicted this here. But they expected a win so....
The whole spin "this is the most important one" and the insistence that this one be the first - as W's strongest subject - W was supposed to "win" this one!
It's like they spin the poll numbers.

34. Here is the poll on the CBS website: a little over 1% agree...
Who won the presidential debate?

John Kerry:
89.24%
President Bush:
9.55%
Neither man. It was a draw :
1.20%

You think the "experts" watched the same debate the rest of America did?

35. How many "experts" did they have to contact before they found liars
like Sabato and Iyengar?

I guess their credibility is shot. Talk about republican bias.

Sometimes you have to admit the truth, even when it hurts, and these "experts" have reduced themselves to nothing but empty shills.

Even my dog was laughing at Bu$h last night.
