MSNBC: "Initial reaction to a debate can change after a few days"
WTF?

The Media whores are desperately trying to convince us that after we've had some time to think about it, we're going to decide Bush really did perform better than Kerry.

In other words, they're going to try their hardest to convince us that we didn't see what we saw for the next couple of days.

1. I do agree
that after a few days that push tends to fade...ala the RNC. But that's what makes next weeks two debates so crucial. We crush scrub/croney in those debates then there's nothing left.

5. True
but the first debate is the most important one.

21. Historically, the first one is most significant
The first Kennedy-Nixon debate is the one everyone remembers.

3. Yep, thats the talking point, but 20 to 30 pt swing?
Not possible. They would have to drum up a huge controversy over something Kerry said, and I don't see that happening since Kerry was on message the whole time. There were no Kerry surprises.

8. Or, said another way...
.... "it sometimes takes several days for us to spin the debate. We really need to wait until you forget what actually happened so we can tell you something else happened."

Fuck that.

9. It must really be painful for them
to have to shill for their employer's prefered candidate - when it is so obvious he is woefully unequal to the task. Spinning straw into fools gold.

11. I noticed this also.
They are smart enough to not even try to spin it outright. This remark gives them a foundation to start chipping away at Kerry's victory. It will be a three or four step process before they decide by god, Georgie won it after all! Watch and see, by the time this Sunday's talk shows roll around, "polls show Bush held his own, and by doing so, won the debate".

12. Hell, it can change the next day.
But Kerry got some good ones in, and all Bush did was repeat the same old lines, so Kerry's accusations weren't countered in any effective way. Iraq and the war on terra are supposed to be Bush's strong suits. Kerry cut him down and good. Anyone watching who hasn't kept up on things is probably Googling 'Tora Bora'. Bush totally blew it w/the North Korea question.

The media can spin this all they want, but anyone watching the debates last night is not going to buy it and enough of Bush's behavior and Kerry's statesmanship leaked out quickly. It was good that the DNC pre-empted much of the spin w/ ads and having their people out there saying Kerry won. It's going to be hard to erase that first impression for anyone merely reading about the debates. 'Bush was angry'.

I believe domestic policy is next, right? Kerry needs to do just what he did last night, tell the truth. My only suggestion to him would be to look into the camera more. Respectfully acknowledge Jim, but talk to US, the American people.

14. They will try to do this. Or to RAPIDLY change the subject.
Gay marriage, anyone? Flag burning?

Since they have so little to work with, they're going to have to go for a hot-button issue that doesn't require anything from Bush. Anything that will get people to STOP talking about how well Kerry did, and how presidential he seemed. Expect more windsurfing type of pictures as attempts to knock Kerry down to a punch line.

15. The reality is that after the *Bush-Gore debates,
most people thought Gore won by "several points." It wasn't until days later, after the media replayed Gore's "sighs" and talked him down, that Bush was declared the winner by the populace.

BTW, how many times did Bush sigh last night? I counted three times.

16. I listened on radio - did Bush really attempt to drink from an empty glass
And, it was painful to hear - the long pauses in Bush's responses really stood out on radio (my PC is not close to the TV, and I wanted to watch the DU commentary...)

Did Bush really attempt to drink water from an empty glass?

18. I missed the empty glass, but I would not doubt it as he ran out of water
in less than an hour.

The funniest scene was when he emphatically said at one point, something to the effect of "Let me answer that! I think..." Then he suddenly stopped and stood there silently with the deer in the headlights look for several seconds - which seemed like an eternity.

Decisive? Not exactly.

and Kerry more than accomplished what he needed to do as the challenger.

22. worried about a rumor
Karl Rove is famous for starting these "whispering campaigns" where he starts a rumor floating around. It occurred to me that the Repugs might get desparate enough to start one about Kerry's health, ie that his cancer is back. I hope that the campaign is ready for it.

24. "We Distort. You Agree"
That's the motto of the Corporate press.

I saw it with mine own 2 eyes last night. A week of Mara Liason and Coke-head Roberts sucking Chimp off on NPR every morning for the next week isn't gonna change things for me.
