Ambient lighting was totally different. When you have dark on all but one side, contrast is higher.

Diffuse, indoor lighting has an orange-ish cast to it (when you take photos indoors with just ordinary light bulbs as the light source, notice how orange they always turn out?). Sunlight shows a color-cast that our eyes have evolved to see as "white," plus it's obviously late morning or early afternoon, so it's shining right down on the top of his head in those outdoor pics. It's analagous to when a garment that looks black when you put it on in the morning turns out to be blue when you step outside.

I'm not saying he dyed his hair or that he didn't - I'm saying that given the wildly different lighting conditions, comparing those two sets of photos is ridiculous. Apples and oranges.
