Hey! I saw a Clark ad last night....................in Virginia!!! |
|
Richmond to be specific. During a "Jeopardy" commercial break.
To some of you this may not seem very odd but here in central Va. we never see political commercials. I can't remember seeing one in '96 or even 2000. Not of the Presidential nature anyway, sometimes you might run across one for a Congressional one.
It was a very good ad. It mentioned: (all black and white photos) his top of the class honors at West Point, service/injured in Vietnam, speaks four languages, Bosnian command "not one American life lost", and then Clark with very everyday looking people. It took me about 10 seconds to realise that I was actually watching a campaign ad because, like I said, we never get them in central Va.
Central Va. is probably already pegged as being Republican in the more affluent (they foster that appearance)Western 'burbs, a bit rednecking in the Southern 'burbs, and Democrat voting in the mostly black and white liberal city of Richmond.
I wonder if these are pre-emptive of a big push by him in Virginia or if the Dems are going after Va. this time. Many consider Va. to be solidly right voting as a whole but that really isn't the case. Northern Va. votes heavily Dem, Hampton Roads (SE Va.) is all military and votes heavily that way, Va. Beach is VERY right voting and the main thrust of money here (Ollie North got most of his money there), to the West Roanoke is an old railroad town with a lot of New Deal Dems but they kind of vote every whicha way, and as you go up the Shenandoah Valley you tend to get more and more rightish.
How about that? A campaign ad in Virginia.

4. Five Southern Senate Seats. We've got to hold them. |
|
Fla, NC, SC, GA, LA.
That's what I've been thinking about this morning. Filibuster power in the Senate. Blocking right-wing LIFE TERM judicial appointments. The Supreme Court.
Our nominee has to help us hold onto Five Southern Senate Seats.

9. I'm not partisan (yet), but.. |
|
It is encouraging to watch Gen. Clark try to outmaneuvre Dr. Dean by not conceeding red states out of hand. Gen. Clark might play a good game of chess.
One thing is sure, both candidates are tough fighers!

6. I agree but then you have to have a Southerner on the ticket |
|
or at least someone who plays one on TV (W ;-) ).
That means that of the field Clark Edwards or Graham (was in the field) has to be on the ticket.
Clark is an interesting combination of military, southern (not born in the south but they can't play that card), and a built-in third party right seeming candidate. Yes he could definitely cause them problems. They of course would bring out the good-ole-boy military network who didn't like Clark's approach to making rank but they will come off as just that good-ole-boys which sells to some and not to others, Clark can be sold as one who "thought outside the box" and created his own path to success.

7. Clark bought a big block of time in VA last week |
|
I'm glad it's starting.
Look for the "American Son" video to be on VA TV soon, as well.
We are going after Virginia!!!

10. I'm putting together my display right now |
|
Not completed but when it is I'll run it through DU to get opinions on it.
I will be volunteering at the Va. Dem campaign (no matter who is nominated) but I also plan to go right into the heart of the 'burbs (Henrico) and see how many votes I can muster. Honestly if I can get ~200 people to turn or at least think about it that will translate into at least double that number of votes (word of mouth). I'm going to address it to their immediate concerns and not go out on what might scare them (LIHOP etc.) or seem out of the mainstream.

8. He's running in North Dakota also |
|
Our caucuses are Feb. 3, and he has some real support here. A national committeeman, and a rumor that Sen. Kent Conrad may endorse him at tonite's Jefferson-Jackson dinner.
