Gaylord Nelson backs Clark

Wisconsin

Former U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, one of the state's most revered political figures, has decided to endorse Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark.

Nelson, who helped graft the roots of the Progressive Party onto the modern-day Democratic Party in the state and served as Wisconsin's governor and U.S. senator for more than 20 years, is set to formally endorse Clark today during a teleconference while Clark makes a campaign swing through Superior.

Nelson praised all nine Democrats seeking their party's nomination for president, but said Clark is "first-rate and has the best chance to win."

Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, said he decided to endorse Clark more than a month ago, in part because of his support from former Sen. Dale Bumpers who, like Clark, hails from Arkansas.

3. What I don't understand is...
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 08:51 AM by Democrats unite
With these endorsment comming from two of the truest & deidicated Democrtas in The Senate (past & present)... They must have missed the Memo from Dean that Clark is a Republican and voted for Reagan & Bush sr.

I guess some are just smarter than others & can see when smoke is being blown up their ass.

5. Hey DemUnite, you didn't have to go negative here!
There was a Dean person here being well mannered and a Clark person (you) being crass. Let's avoid gratuitous bitching, okay?

BTW, when I first read the headline to this thread, I thought it said Gaylord Perry endorses Clark. Now that would a cool blast from the past. I wonder why there aren't any young people named "Gaylord".

8. Good going Clark!
Wisconsin... I have a feeling WI might lean Clark's way. If we can be competitive in the South and win Midwestern states, we'll do extremely well.

10. Clark - only candidate with TV ads in Wisconsin. Is focusing on state....
http://www.madison.com/captimes/news/stories/64968.php

Nelson's endorsement is another sign of the intense focus Clark's campaign is placing on Wisconsin. Clark is the only candidate with TV ads airing around the state. The ads began running in the state's top five TV markets last week and will continue until the Feb. 17 primary.

Clark also has sent his deputy national campaign manager, Peter Shakow, to head the Wisconsin operation. And last weekend Clark turned to Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton to help shore up his support among women voters in New Hampshire.

-snip-

In addition to this weekend's appearance in Superior, Clark will be in Racine on Tuesday for a "Working for Wisconsin" forum sponsored by the state Democratic Party and moderated by Gov. Jim Doyle.

11. WHooooo Hooooooooo! Yippeeeeeee
I have gotten to know Gaylord Nelson's son a little bit this last summer - definitely not following in the political footsteps of his father, but a delightful man!!! I got to learn a lot more about former Gov. and U.S. Senator Nelson, and I've heard a lot of fun stories from the 'old days.'

As a small aside here, Gaylord Jr., who is in his 40's, confessed to having run away from Sunday School at the Unitarian Church one Sunday morning - he and a friend went out the bathroom window and started walking the 7 or 8 miles home. We did a little math and figured out that it may well have been the Sunday School class that my mom was teaching that he snuck out of! Madison is SUCH a small town!

Anyway, back to the point at hand, I just couldn't be more delighted about this endorsement. Gaylord Nelson was not only an amazing leader in environmental policies, but he also was a major inspiration for our current Senator Russ Feingold to get into politics. And now, my son, who works for Feingold, is in turn inspired by such men of honor who take the initiative to lead our state and our country towards new heights.

THESE are the role models for our young people!!! I can't WAIT till Clark is in the White House, so the youth of our country will be able to look at that position with pride, as something to aspire to. It gives me such hope for our country!

27. I love Russ Feingold
He has more integrity in his little finger than most politicians have in their whole body.

I don't always agree with him, but I always trust him.
