Anecdotal evidence: Expectations mangagement works.
I work in a popular medical school in college. And as I was walking to lunch today, I overheard several medical students discussing the debate:
"he just kept staring into the camera and not saying anything. I thought everyone said he was such a great debater. What were they talking about?"

"Maybe they were talking about his dad."

"Probably."

This is what worked against us in 2000, when the expectation was Gore was going to trounce Bush.
