If KE04 & the press play it right Bush may put in a bind next week. . . |
|
Kerry and all Democrats have had to deal with issues like gay marriage, late term abortions and others that put them in difficult positions with their base. I have it on good authority that an issue may be introduced next week (NOT BY A CANDIDATE FOR OFFICE THIS YEAR) that if handled right by KE04, the press and bloggers who bang the shit out of it will put Bush in a difficult position. Now this issue may be introduced and nobody will pay attention, however if they do and the press forces Bush to take a position then he has to choose between pissing off $upporter$ (not even his base . . .LOL) or appeasing swing voters. I also think this will impact him in a few swing states.
Look this is only my 10th post (with this screen name) but trust me, I am a DU veteran who has not posted much under my primary screen name recently. Also I don't want to get hopes up only for things not to pan out, but pay attention to the news over the next week and if this story breaks. . .be prepared to turn up the heat. Keep this kicked but don't obsess.

3. please no more wedge issues |
|
I just hope it does not turn into another wedge issue. I have no sympathy for the Republicans, but wedge issues just turn my stomach.
I hope it has to do with fiscal responsibility. That seems to be the strongest Bush weakness that resonates with Republicans.

4. Well sort of a wedge issue. . . |
|
. . .but only because its something that an overwhelming people in America would support but the president does not.

I keep asking Republicans why Roe v Wade hasn't been challenged. After all, they're in control of every branch of government. The White House, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court. Where's the challenge to Roe v Wade they've been promising for decades?
I suggest that the Republicans would hate to overturn Roe v Wade because they would lose the biggest wedge issue of them all.
I would love it if some wild-eyed Republican in Congress (and there are so many) launched a frontal attack on abortion right now! Most wealthy Republicans are 100% in favor of keeping abortion safe, private, and legal. At the same time, the fundamentalist Christian and Muslim foot soldiers that the elite rely upon to get people like W elected will be furious if any Republican votes in support of abortion.
Challenging Roe v Wade right now would devastate the entire Republican machine.

8. media does not massage anti-Bush messages right now |
|
especially after the CBS News castration, the media is not going to take a nuanced story and work it. the media refuses to even acknowledge the clear and decisive victory Kerry scored in the debate. Bush would have to be caught in the act of murder by a Fox camera crew before anyone would even take notice.

10. You think someone would take notice THEN? |
|
You're quite the optimist, aren't you?
Okay, so what do a majority of Americans (including, presumably, a majority of Republicans) support that Bush opposes? That's only one of the questions of course -- the other is, how big of an issue is this for voters?

13. good point, but not strong enough |
|
cheaper drugs from Canada is not enough to worry Karl Rove. voters are not fired up enough about that issue to actually vote on it. an example of a voting issue is gun control. most people favor gun control. problem is that most supporters do not base their voting on this issue. on the other hand the minority who oppose gun control, such as the NRA, vote heavily on this issue. this is an example of Republicans pandering to the electorate. in an age where the "War on Terrorism" is used as a reason to rip away all kinds of Constitutional guarantees, guns laws are allowed to weaken because of pressure from the gun lobby whose members are highly mobilized and vote the issue. common sense would dictate that if you are going to start to remove civil liberties in an effort to stop terrorism that you would include assault weapons. no, instead you take away habeus corpus.

Just remember its all in the spin and this race is so close that it can hurt him in at least one swing state that I know of. But it has to be played right.

16. can you give us an indication of timing and ... |
|
will we know when it is out there? Or is this a subtle issue that the average voter would miss if the press doesn't play it up.
How obvious will it be?
