Just got a call from the Kerry/Edwards campaign
"Daddy, it's for you. I don't know who it is or what they want."

"Hello?"

"Yes, this is John calling from the Kerry/Edwards campaign. Is this _________?"

"Yes."

"Can I have just a few moments of your time?"

"Sure, I love talkin' to you guys!" (I have just opened my third beer at this point).

"Well the reason I called is --"

"Wait, are you going to ask me for money? 'Cuz I don't have any money left to give."

"No sir, we're going to be canvassing in the ne--"

"Done. When and where?"

So, tomorrow at ten am I'm going canvassing, just to chat up the neighbors about John Kerry, and demonstrate the awesome volume of seemingly-trivial political knowledge I've gained at DU over the last three and a half years.

Wish me luck!

3. Where the Hell are you?
Hope it's a swing.

Here in Georgia you have to badger the state party for volunteer work.

6. I feel for you
My folks still live in Texas (I'm in Nevada now), and they were lamenting the fact that volunteering was pretty much useless for them (and my father has been volunteering for dandidates since Adlai Stevenson -- hell, I canvassed for Bill Clinton in East Texas in '92).

At any rate, they were miserable until I pointed out the fact that they could not only help out in local elections, but were within an hour's drive of at least two potential swing states. Now they volunteer in neighboring states on weekends, and are happy to at least be doing something.

Georgia's not that big, is it? Can you reach Florida or North Carolina easily?

13. Capitilizing on the success of the debates?
In addition to the meme of "it was a draw," I've noticed the other talking point of "it will energize a flagging democratic base."

Flagging my ass...

12. As I've said in numerous other posts
Just because you live in Texas doesn't mean that you can't make a difference. Not only can you work for local progressive candidates, odds are you can also reach Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, or even Oklahoma -- all states where we have a shot at actually winning, despite what the polls say. I've got friends and family in Texas who commute in order to help out.

Unless you live in Austin, in which case the only thing you can do is rant on the internet and make preparations to flee to Mexico if worse comes to worse. Of course, if you live in Austin or even Dallas, you're probably yuppie scum, and not a Texan anyways. Damned city-slickers...

(note to the humor impaired: the preceding comments regarding Austonians were a joke. I'd move there in a second if I had my way)

14. Well I don't live in Austin, I am in San Antonio
and I am not "yuppie scum" and while I wasn't born in this state( California native)I have resided here for 12 yrs, so I guess I might be a "Texan". Anyway, my son lives in Las Vegas and I will be leaving at the end of the week to visit him, also my parents who live in Az, Kingman to be exact. My parents are heavily involved in the democratic party there and I will be helping them out when I visit. Will that work?

16. I made some of those calls from Texas
Though I don't think I was the one to call you, I made about 20 calls yesterday on behalf of the campaign to Cleveland and Las Vegas to get volunteers for this weekend's canvassing. That's awesome to hear your jazzed response!!

And for those in Texas and other non-battleground states, there's still a lot you can do! Like make calls to find volunteers and voters in battleground states, and raise money with house parties. Sign up to volunteer at johnkerry.com, moveonpac.org, and other activist organizations. Check out America Coming Together, Democracy for America, People for the American Way, Democratic National Committee, and follow links to other sites.

Here in Dallas there's a very active Kerry group without an official Kerry campaign presence. Check out www.dallasforkerry.com to see all that we're up to. I'm proud of the folks that created that website, and proud of all that an impassioned, independent grassroots organization is accomplishing in Bush's home state.
