McCain called on the carpet by Bush aides |
|
"Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona, campaigning with Bush during the day, said the evening was Kerry's "brightest moment" of the past six weeks. That assessment seemed to displease Bush aides, who arranged a second meeting between the senator and reporters during the day." http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041002/ap_on_el_pr/campaign_rdp&cid=694&ncid=716

Not entirely, at least. Even this time, he was unable to refrain from giving Kerry at least some praise.
"This time, McCain said that based on "style points," Kerry had done "very well." "John Kerry showed significant debating skills. He presented himself very well."
He added, "I think what we saw in the president was the steadfast, self-confident, single-minded almost commitment to fighting and winning this war on terror and doing whatever is necessary to protect the people of this country."

An "almost" commitment? I wonder if this is a typo or a Freudian slip.

26. The whole thing with McCain is |
|
that McCain and Kerry are good friends, with a long history between them. I think John McCain is fighting for what he sees as the heart and soul of the Republican party: Eisenhower's "dynamic conservatism." If your going to do that, you have to back its nominee. I think he's fighting a losing battle, but I recall he joined the Bush campaign with the explicit condition that he would not directly criticize Kerry. In fact, I'm not certain that McCain is actually going to vote for Bush. Sadly, in this situation, McCain's words count a lot more than McCain's vote (esp. in AZ).

I know people slag McCain as an opportunist, but you gotta hand it to the guy for this one. He makes nice with Bush and sucks up to Republicans, getting them to believe he's on board, then takes this perfect opportunity to sucker-punch Bush. We all remember the South Carolina primary race of 2000 and what was done to McCain, the leading nominee; well, so does he. So he waits until just after Bush's disappointing performance in last night's debate, then when he knows the GOP PR machine is in high gear trying to minimize the damage, he drops a small compliment for Bush's opponent, which resonates not only because it creates dissonance in the spin, but because it is widely dissiminated, since he is such an important national figure. The result is that not only does he get away with it, with just an awkward and hastily called second press conference (which also gets reported), but continues to stick around in the campaign to potentially cause trouble again later in October. Hey, it just occurred to me -- maybe McCain is HIMSELF trying to become the October Surprise, on which the election turns!

POS, he makes me wonder if somewhere deep down inside there may actually be a soul. I don't know. He is really just another corrupt politician with a good riff about being something different. We will have to see, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to pull a shocker. I don't think he has it in him. He would have to hold a press conference, put his fate in the people of Arizona, and walk away from the party.

17. The long and the short of it is McCain doesn't have the |
|
balls to stand up for his convictions. He tries to play Moderate Man but he keeps toting the water bucket for the home team. He KNOWS that Bush needs to be de-selected but you won't find him admitting it to anyone but himself under his covers at night. You can't be moral and have integrity while trying to play both sides against the middle. I would respect him more if he would just quit pandering to both sides. Bush and Rove reamed him in the primaries four years ago. He has a really short memory or he is a moron or he just doesn't care as long as he is on the winning team. He should find a backbone and take a stand - the hell with pleasing everyone. At one time I admired him, no longer. He has taught me he can not be trusted when the going gets tough.
Unfortunately, I have added Colin Powell to the same list. You just can't pick and choose what issues you want to support and which ones you are going to ignore. If McCain and Powell (among many others) can't decide to put partisan politics aside for the good of the country, well the hell with them and the horse they rode in on.

When HE'S running against him, then he says Bush should be totally ashamed of the sleaze tactics he used against him. But now, as President he's Allstate keeping us safe.
I have no use for McCain. He's two faced. He's got the lowest standards for credibility. He can't even stand against the man who trashed him.
Powell sold out his core values too. You'll see it and so will the world when he writes his book. :puffpiece: Doesn't do us any good now.

He may be moderate compared to some of today's extremist Looney Tunes Right Wing wackos like Santorum, DeLay & Brownback. But, he is right in line was somebody like Barry Goldwater. Back in his day, Goldwater was so conservative he was considered out of the mainstream & unelectable.

32. The ONLY reason I have a shred of compassion for McCain is... |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 08:12 AM by KzooDem
The years he spent in Vietnam, first as a soldier and then as a prisoner of war. For that reason alone he commands my respect. He HAS to know what our troops are up against in Iraq and it must be killing him to see the needless peril in which George & Dick, Inc. are placing our troops.
That's where my compassion ends, however. If he had any cojones he would be ALL OVER BUSH for his fuck up in Iraq. My instinct tells me that the RNC has some sort of negative personal info on him that they would release if he deviated from the party line, and McCain knows it. That would explain why they marched him off to the principal's office and slapped his hands and sent him back to the media to tell the Reich's official version of the post debate analysis. I can just see Karl and Karen pointing their fat, bloated little Republican claws at him and saying "Change your tone right now, or you know what will go down in your permanent record."
I may be off base on this, but it's just a really strong hunch I have. I mean my God...have you seen the AP pictures of him during the debates? He looks absolutley dejected and morose....like he knows he's penned in the GOP cage like a goose being force-fed lies so the GOP can fatten him up to whip out their next batch of tomain-tainted foie gras with no apparent means of escape that wouldn't lead to slaughter.

Bush and his campaign stooges are taking you for a chump! Remember the 2000 campaign. Are you selling your soul to the devil with the hope that Bush is re-elected and you get a cushy cabinet post?
If I had served my country nobly, spent years at the Hanoi Hilton as a POW, and came back to run for president only to be attacked by a spoiled-brat AWOL with the IQ of a door knob, he would be so high up on my shit list there'd be no chance of him coming off of it.
What goes through these peoples' minds?
