Kerry and Manicures -- what's that about?
The Republicans have made a huge number of wise-ass cracks about Kerry getting manicures.

Does anyone know why?

I can understand that it's intended, in its own beery way, to make Kerry seem effeminate, but why the fixation on manicures?

2. A Faux columnist posted a 'satire' on the front page of the
Faux News site earlier today that attributed quotes to Kerry about things like getting manicures. Trying to insinuate, of course, that he's effeminate. They got busted -- not that I think they didn't mean to post it, but people squealed -- and took it off the website. There were posts about it in LBN, I know, and possibly GD: Extra Crispy.

11. The way I read it, it wasn't SATIRE...
the author was dead serious and meant for it to look as if Kerry really made those comments. They can claim it was a joke and a mistake all they want, but I tend to doubt it.

15. Guess I'm trying to give the little Borg
credit for being bright enough to intend it as satire, and claim it was -- we used to write stories like that for our college newspaper, too, but we'd never have made the mistake of actually publishing them for the whole campus to see. Granted, we did paste them up and put them on the bulletin boards in the newspaper office ...

Ours were all Ronald Reagan jokes, though, which tells you how old I am.

3. It is lies that someone at Faux News thought would be
funny to report. The quotes are made up, never said, Faux has apologized for the "misquotes" (aka known as lies). But that shouldn't stop their spread, you know freepers, just because it isn't true doesn't mean that it shouldn't be repeated ad infinitum. They are grasping at straws.

4. He's not a reg-lurrr guy
He's some big sissy-pants, latte-drinkin' elistist librul commie snob. Not a reg-lurr guy like Bush, who no doubt has callouses on his callouses from clearing brush and grabbing Barney out of armadillah holes.

Bush probably gets a manny on one hand while he's playing computer solitaire with the other.

9. I read somewhere
that Kerry got a manicure in his hotel the day of the debate. I am not going to automatically say that is a lie--Kerry obviously is well groomed right down to his cuticles. It is a presidents responsibility and part of the job to look the part and look as good as possible right down to your nails. So I imagine that Kerry takes care of his nails and that is GREAT. I bet W just chews on his.

10. Carl Cameron, the Fakes News Kerry campaign correspondent...
...whose wife worked on the 2000 Bush campaign, posted a story about Kerry's rally in Tampa this morning, with quotes from Kerry asking if the crowd liked his manicure and proclaiming himself a metrosexual.

Later, Fakes News revealed that Cameron had invented the quotes, claiming it was a joke that "accidentally" was uploaded to their website. They said it was definitely not malice, oh no no no, and that Cameron had been disciplined.

And if you believe any of that, you're on the wrong board.

18. actually, this
story was going around even before the debate took place. One of the people at the hotel talked to a news person about how Kerry had spent the day preparing for the debate. I could care less if he takes care of his nails or not--I don't even see why that would be something to talk about? Yes--he probably does take care of them--he is very well-groomed. If he were NOT well groomed--then I would be upset.

13. Because they want to feminize him
It's a gutter tactic of the repukes. The problem is, it backfires on them. Bush came across as virtually neaderthal last night, and Kerry came across as having the demeanor most Americans are looking for in a President.

14. as a woman...
I find nothing wrong with men getting manucures. In fact, there is nothing more disgusting than a guy who does not take care of his hands and his fingernails...ewww...the same with toenails. If he were wearing pink polish, it would be different, but based on my observation, he either is one of the lucky ones to have ridge-free nails, or he gets them buffed every once in awhile. Big friggin' deal.

I get mine done every 15 days on the clock. No polish, just the cuticles snipped and pushed back and they are buffed to be really shiny. It looks like I have polish when I don't. Of course, I am a woman so there are different standards and stereotypes, but these idiots really need to go shove it. These useless talking points get old.

also cuts Pickles' (Yeah yeah, I know. But my wife has been going there longer and you try getting someone to switch a hair cutter they like). The nail lady told her she does both Pickles and Chimps' nails.

So whores, before you pick up this latest third-grade smear job on Kerry, spend fifteen minutes finding out who buffs up Chimps Mr. Pointer.

19. It's just a stupid meme they hope will catch on, but it's failedl.

Remember the RWers saying of Kerry "He's a sweater and women don't like sweaters!" They claimed he wanted the room temp below 70 so they insisted it be warmer.

Buncha dim bulbs probably damaged their own guy's chances since he's the one I've seen sweating buckets on the campaign trail. He was probably sweating like crazy inside his suit. That would explain why he was hitting the water every chance he got, (when not looking like a deer in the headlight. . .)

Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 12:30 AM by kskiska
and his fingernails on one hand are a little longer than on the other. This fact spawned hateful remarks from the wingnuts who loved to point this out in close-up pictures. Next came manicure jokes. Then came Carl Cameron's little story.

Rove's stated aim of this campaign was to make Kerry an object of ridicule.

27. I used to play classical
guitar and you do have to have your finger nails longer because you don't use picks. I'm right handed so my right hand my finger nails were just a little longer than the left hand and I like to have my nails short. They will do anything to poor Kerry. Just like Clinton and Hillary. I dont think they got anything on Chelsea did they?

25. I think they're trying to play defense
Because Bush sounded shrill, whiny, pissy, and -frankly- a little bitchy last night... Hardly the John Wayne "I've got 10 pounds of presidential package stuffed into this flight suit" He-Man Cowboy fantasy they seem to be in love with. He looked pasty, little, scared and weak. So, they desperately try ressurect the mental perception of Kerry in proverbial panties, when he obviously looked presidential, together, intelligent and poised.

And, for the record, I find this notion that the president has to be hyper-masculinized to be utterly idiotic and ridiculous. That's their trip, but if you look at these pictures maybe it's apparent why they protesteth a bit too much. I think they're projecting, frankly.

32. I got it from 4 separate sources--none of them
FOX related.

I read it in the Des Moines Register and a couple of other papers. I also heard it on the news a few hours before the debates--they interviewed the girl from the hotel. I believe it--so what? Kerry got a manicure--it is not a lie. Why is it a big deal? Apparently Bush gets manicures too--if you are in the public eye--you have to take care of yourself. It is mentioned in this paper (search for the word manicure--it is well into the article).

Kerry may well get manicures. They don't get polish; they just have a pro taking care of their nails, and they don't have to deal.

31. Remember flap over Dan Rather? Well...
where's the outrage over Fox making news of a false report? Sure, they apologized (and so did Rather, but he's still being crucified), but they hid the fact that the source was their own Carl Cameron, who covers the Kerry campaign. If the media had standards, Fox would be on the defensive today as CBS was with the Rather report.

I wouldn't take lightly these jabs at haircuts and manicures. They are part of the the relentless right wing campaign to "frame" John Kerry in the minds of the public in a way that makes him seem less down-to-earth than Bush. Beware: this stuff works! Four years ago, I heard many people respond with a set response when they heard the name of Al gore: "But can you trust him?" Asked why not, they had no answer; the message had been planted in their brains by Fox, Limbaugh and 600-plus rightwing talk radio shows screaming far into the night all across America.

It will only slow when what's left of a decent media recognizes that these smear campaigns are hard news and should be covered so.

Men like Kerry and Roosevelt were raised in affluence, just like dumbya.Big difference is they performed the duties of their class, and then helped mine. Also their not afraid of the rest of us getting there. So what if they talk like THURSTON HOWELL,* talks like a man that works with his hands,And as we all know the only work he's done,is washing his hands.I know it's hard work.keep pickin Losers.
