what will CHENEY do in the debate ?
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 08:54 AM by JI7
i asked this about bush before. and i'm now wondering what cheney will do. i'm guessing he will go on and on about how bad kerry is. will list things that kerry opposed and other crap. i think he will be less likely to criticize edwards and focus more on kerry. i'm not sure he will even defend bush since most of what cheney does is attack kerry. in fact i don't think i have ever heard him say a positive thing about bush.

because of the way joe lieberman behaved in the vp debates in 2000 it's hard to say how exactly cheney will go about when he is actually challenged as i expect edwards will do this time.

on edit, i also think this is a sit down debate. edwards wanted to stand but cheney wanted to sit so they agreed to sit. i wonder how close together they will be sitting. weren't lieberman and cheney very close together ? a least that's what i seem to remember. and in the sit down debate between bush and gore they seemed further apart.

1. Well, we can hope that cheney continues to spew the venom
he has spewed over the last few weeks. I love seeing a smiling, gracious Edwards call him a liar........in a nice way, of course.

3. Edwards spends most of his time talking about what we have to offer
but he sure can go on the attack and when he does he is totally on point and comes out looking as sweet as ever.

5. Edwards is a trial lawyer, used to going up against corporate
sacks of lying shit like Cheney. Yes, Cheney will spend his time lying about Kerry. Yes, Edwards will spend his time attacking Cheney to the point of wiping the floor with him.

Remember, these guys have no record to run on. Cheney hasn't even been visible for much of the past 4 years. Even his appearances at GOP fundraisers have been perfunctory. All they can try to do is smear the opposition.

We'll see if mean old Edwards causes poor fragile Cheney to suffer another coronary during or right after the debate. You know McCain is waiting off to the side, ready to pounce.

and his long, green lizard tongue snakes out and tries to strangle Edwards!

Wonder how they can 'spin' that?

7. Two very crafty debaters
I'd love to just say Edwards will mop up the floor with Cheney, but Cheney is a smart, wiley, aggressive, crafty bastard. The debate should be a good old fashioned tense bareknuckle brawl.

Cheney is mean, but he's direct, and don't underestimate how smart he is. He's no Bush. And he knows how to argue, and he knows how to make his point vividly and succinctly. His directness has a charisma all its own.

Edwards, on the other hand, does not have the political experience Cheney has, but he has the trial lawyer background. He's used to making his points in ways that red neck southern (Hey, I'm a redneck southerner, I can say it!) juries will not only understand, but will respond to on a visceral level. Which means he says things in ways that sound intelligent and logical, but that also appeal to the heart.

And Edwards knows how to respond to attacks, whether direct, subtle or implied.

In short, both men know how to debate, know how to work an audience, and know how to attack.

Their weaknesses: Cheney is arrogant, and acts haughty when challenged. Edwards, on the other hand, sometimes acts too packaged, too smooth, and in a closeup that really shows. Both have to avoid those shortcomings.

This debate should be better than and NFL or boxing matchups in the next couple of weeks. SHould be a good debate to watch at a corner bar with a pint of ale in each fist.

10. Actually, I expect Cheney to be pretty good
I don't think this debate will have any fireworks at all.

I think the best thing that will happen is so superficial it pains me to mention it ... but Cheney is ugly as sin and Edwards is gorgeous. The contrast will be helpful.

11. silly prediction
I think he'll walk out on stage in black robes. At the end of his opening statement he'll throw his head back, put his hands up, and shoot bluish/purplish lightening from his fingers a la the Emperor from Star Wars.
