Nine of eleven writers used these words to describe Kerry's performance: "direct, articulate, informed, and substantive", "skilled, balanced, experienced, and reasonable", "showed more leadership and resolve", "strong", "thoughtful", "intelligent", "articulate", "decisive", courageous", "leader", "knowledgeable", "achievable solutions", level-headed"
And these words were used by those nine writers to describe Bush's performance: "worse than embarrassing", "appalling", "insecure", "bumbling", "unprepared", "likable", "plain speaker", "uncomfortable", "weak grasp", "lack of focus", "confused misdirection".
In support of bush, two writers were able to only find fault in Kerry's "patrician demeanor and didactic delivery" and the fact that Kerry looked at Lehrer while speaking, while Bush looked at the "American people" (i.e., the camera).
