You know, reality. The stuff that the Bush campaign is not about. The thing that doesn't go away when you most wish that it would.

I think the worst thing is that Kerry showed up and didn't do anything except Look Good and explain his own position. No personal attacks, no real argument about morality, no wailing, no interest in what Bush said but for the facts. Nothing that Bush was told to expect and fight about. So Bush stood at the podium, repeat his own buzzwords and pointless slogans ad nauseum, spun his wheels, and was perplexed about what to do with the time he had on his hands with nothing reactive to say- and that turned into Operation Footbullet.

So Kerry beat him in the most elementary way possible- he started digging himself into a hole and Kerry made sure he kept on digging.

And so he's completely pissed at himself that he got utterly outsmarted on the most fundamental plane of PR gamesmanship.

Kerry could have kicked Bush's ass with one hand tied behind his back, but he knew he didn't have to. All he had to do was sit back and let W do it to himself. Kerry retained his dignity and calm, while Bush looked like the real fool that he is.
