Anyone changing their vote needs to see Going UpRiver...
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 01:16 PM by Dawgs
I think many of us try to encourage others to change their vote by recommending F9/11. I do agree that F9/11 would help, but many voters already know what kind of President Bush has been.

I think that Going UpRiver would be a better choice at this point.

Kerry has momentum from the debate. He's convinced many people that he can be President, but I don't think he's closed the deal on everyone just yet.

If they are willing, do your best to get them to this movie.

Also, go to this link and vote for this movie online.

Current results show the critic reviews giving 5/5, while the online poll shows 2.29 out of 5.

6. Let us know
how your relative reacts to it.

I might recommend it to one of my Bush supporting relatives if it is good.

12. Question--
Is the movie just about his time in Vietnam, or does it also talk about his later years in politics? I have a fencesitter friend who is not very interested in the Vietnam events, but she would like to know more about his years in the Senate. Everything I've read about the movie so far sounds like it focuses on Vietnam. I am interested in seeing it, but it may not be the persuasive tool I need for my friend.

tanyev, get your friend to watch it anyway, even if she says she's not very interesed in Vietnam events. This movie focuses on a specific event, the five days in April 1971, when Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) led demonstrations in Washington, camping out on the Mall, leading up to Kerry's testimony against the war during Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings. It's all very powerful stuff in an excellent movie, and would be even if Kerry were now a retired shoe store clerk who'd never sought public office.

The movie doesn't go into his Senate years, it doesn't even mention that he's running for president! It tells a little about his background (childhood, college), a little bit more about his Vietnam experiences (effectively smashing those Swift Boat Liars for Bush in the face, though they're never mentioned), and a little bit about his casting around, trying to figure out what to do with himself after returning from Vietnam. The VVAW was the thing, was THE thing that galvanized him, starting really with the Winter Soldiers hearings. From then on, the bulk of the movie is about the 5-day demonstration, and it's ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING.

It's one of those documentaries that, even if you go in not interested in the subject, you're riveted to the screen, and walk out of it with a different perspective and knowing a little bit more than you did before.

Get them to watch it by saying it's not a campaign commercial, and it's not about Kerry as potential president. It's about a fascinating 5 days in American history that few people remember or know about.

9. This was a review I gave yesterday after seeing it as well

You can still go and see it; but October 19th is the date that will be on DVD. This documentary was great. The start is a little slow; but you learn a lot about who John Kerry is. You even learn how his father influenced him when he was a little boy. You also learn about the leadership of John Kerry. This movie is a great debunker as well. I dare any Veteran of any war to watch this movie and then stand by O'Neil.

The movie itself is very powerful. We were the first showing here in Dallas when I went. It wasn't full because it was still early; people were clapping when the movie was over and nobody wanted to leave when the pictures were showing. The more I watched the movie the more I wanted to scream out NOW THERE IS A TRUE AMERICAN PRESIDENT.

The documentary isn't the Moore style of documentary. It is a movie that shines a light on what Kerry saw and what made him go to war. It gives elements of both side on what happen during that time period. By hearing of how Vietnam was you gain a better understanding of why Bush is like Nixon and Iraq is like Vietnam. O'Neil is also the patsy of Nixon. I recommend all to see this movie and then show it to a friend. You'll gain a greater respect for the next president of the united states.

P.S. just a side not; but there was a similarly case in Vietnam to how soldiers were treating Viet con. In a picture one solider was holding his rifle in the nose of his Prisoner while they took pictures. They also gathered a lot of bodies together and took pictures of those with smiles. The only thing I didn't see was leashes.

about John Kerry's early years, how would you rate "Going Upriver"?

I plan to see it this weekend. Honestly, what I've seen about Kerry so far about his early years is what clinched my enthusiastic support for him. I've become quite smitten with him, he's so impressive.
