I think Bush sewed up the election when he used the word 'vociferously' |
|
in the debate.
So poised! so strong! so many syllables.
I almost drove my car off the road laughing when I heard that.

36. Yeah, I was wondering what word he *might* have been looking for. |
|
Although he *may* have intended to use "vociferously"... he just has no clue what the word means.
Of course, he probably views anyone who's "vociferous" as a terrorist.

5. Didn't he mis-use the word? |
|
I don't recall exactly, but I remember him struggling to come up with the word, and it being not quite right... like he wanted "violently" or something.

I think he used the word to describe the war--something about how he/we is fighting so vociferously. I thought the word seemed inappropriate, too.

12. Yes, I think he was going for "forcefully" or "vigorously" |
|
and put them together (sounded like "fercifrous"). "Vociferous" applies to talking, arguing maybe, but not physical fighting in a war.

"The enemy understands a free Iraq will be a major defeat in their ideology of hatred. That‘s why they‘re fighting so vociferously. "
Fighting and yelling - I hate it when the enemy does that.

24. "they" are vociferous |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 05:52 PM by foo_bar
The grammatical mistake is the shift to a plural pronoun (in "they're") after "the enemy" and "an enemy". Vociferous is a Pentagon euphemism for "generating press". edited for footnote: For each identifiable strategy--and there are three discussed in this paper--security, enclave, and search and destroy--there were many proponents, some of them quite vociferous.- "The Pentagon Papers" http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/pentagon3/pent8.htm
