Cheney will destroy Edwards!
Dick has such gravitas, and Edwards, he's just a ... trial lawyer.

We should be very worried about Tuesday.

(Was that convincing, or was it too much?)

60. Yeah, that's right-- How will Johnny Compete ?
I mean, gee, Dick was Secretary of Defense and nimbly guided our national defense toward privatization. Then he made sure things in the private sector went well, too, by joining Halliburton at the demanding post of CEO, and then, when called upon to serve, he sacrificed for his country again. He assumed the role of Vice President to guide our nation further into the promised land of privatization, with only his little tax cut and paltry retirement package to comfort him in the stressful, misunderstood career of war profiteering... Helping America by helping its Private Pioneers... Striking out to chart new territory -- bravely confidently assuring disbelievers that the bounty would trickle down since the 1980's... What a guy... What complex experience... Public sector, private sector, and privatization of the public sector! How will Eddie compete with that ???

13. Make way for Raging Bull Cheney
As long as his pacemaker's fully charged, he's a veritable steamroller. Such a dynamic speaking style, too.

I'm more concerned that the October surprise will be Cheney dropping out for "health reasons," or because he realizes that he needs to spend more time with his family and prepare for the Rapture. Then good ol' boy John McCain will climb aboard the Straight Talk Express for one more tour. Maybe John Boy can drop him off somewhere.

21. This VP debate may help swing the election
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 07:24 PM by JKiG
With the huge momentum shift from the first Presidential debate, John Edwards needs to drill home some key topics.

The fact that this debate takes place in Cleveland magnifies its importance. There will be a lot of local television coverage in that area. For Kerry to take Ohio he needs strong voter turnout in the Cleveland area.

For Edwards to build momentum he needs to pound home that Bush’s policies in Iraq have failed, and that the Presidents litmus test for leadership, “steadfast unwavering” is headed right over a cliff.

He needs to make Cheney either take back his claim that Kerry would get us attacked, or make him stick to his absurd position.

Bush had nothing of substance to say during the first debate. He looked arrogant and angry. If Edwards can get under Cheney’s skin it will make W’s irritation look mild, and that just may be the beginning of the end for the BA.

What game is that? To paraphrase Kerry, you got to turn into your enemy and attack, seize the momentum.

This thing could go either way right now, but the potential for a blowout is huge. Bush needs to go. Even the Republicans know it.

30. It's been the observation of many politicos that the key to
winning the "media spin" on the debates is to set expectations for one's own candidate very low before the debate. For example, in 2000, most people thought Gore would beat Bush in the debates. Yet the media seemed to set two different standards for them, a much lower one for Bush. Because Bush was expected to do poorly, the fact that he showed up without stumbling onto the stage and completed whole sentences was treated as a victory. So, we've decided if that's the way the game must be played, we'll help out. You'll see a lot of posts here setting the bar comfortably low for our boy John Edwards. Tongue-in-cheek, you know?

22. Edwards is a nice kid
going up against the Dark Lord of the Republican Sith, Dick Cheney. Cheney eats nice little guys like Edwards for breakfast and throws the bones to his lap dog, W. Possessor of the most potent mind of the 20th and 21st centuries, it was he who first discerned the secret code within Strauss' explication of the secret code within Plato's writings. Plunging deep into the dark sewers of human thought, he rose at last triumphantly to the surface bearing the Sacred Turd of the Philosophers ... and gave us the wisdom of PNAC.

Against such an intellect, against the sheer power of the man's personality, Edwards simply stands no chance. Because of the purity of potency of his bodily essences, Cheney's virility will overpower the petty pretty boy lawyer. Women will swoon or throw their panties at him. Men will fall down upon their knees in awe.

All liberals will run in dismay from his wrath. His minions shall run us down, place collars around our necks and force us to submit to his Dark Lady, Ann Coulter while baying like the unpatriotic dogs we are.

This debate must be stopped, else we face a disaster of Biblical proportions! Is there no way to call it off??? Will not Edwards show some common sense and simply hide??????

24. Expectations game vs framing issues
I appreciate the expectations game, like a drinking game or such.
Simple and silly.

i did read an interesting bit on Hesiod's Counterspin Central on framing issues as a part of expectations game. This raised some good points. So I thought I'd share.

The basic idea is to not just frame expectations by praising the opponent/downplaying you own (everybody is on to that , so much so that it's now a joke) but to frame issues and hurdles that the opponent must pass in order to succeed. If he doesn't, then he has clearly failed.

So for instance, Dick cheney has severe credibility issues regarding halliburton's crooked books and sweetheart deals BOTH while he was CEO AND now in Iraq. If he cannot PROVE to the American people that these charges are meritless, then the American People will NOT be able to trust him going forward.
(This is a rough idea that could be much better.)

We have seen both the GOP and mediahos use this. Kerry had to do XYZ or he waas toast at the 1st debate. When he passed those and bush floundered, they changed their script to say that it didn/t matter and the debate wasn;t the crucial turning point they had just described less than 2 hours earlier, but a blip on the radar. Their slip was showing, and they looked a bit embarassed. Reps response was of course to attack "vociferociously" in rabid dog fascion, as is their style.

Anyway, it's halfway down the page, along with some other interesting thoughts. If it gives anyone ideas for LTTEs or such, please share.

25. Cheney is the second-greatest debater that ever lived
Cheney has never lost a debate. Many of Cheney's former opponents simply conceded the race to him after their debates.

Edwards is terribly young and inexperienced. I can't remember what he did before being senator, but I doubt it had anything to do with public speaking or persuading people. Edwards has stage fright. He freezes up when he has to talk to people.

This is going to be terrible. I don't know if I can watch.
