Clark delivers his Vision for the future speech, must read

excerpt...

"Working together, we can build a world in which the rule of law - not the rule of force - governs relations between states. A world in which leaders respect the rights of their people, and nations seek peace, not destruction or domination. And neither we nor anyone else should live in fear ever again.

As with science and technology, there could be a dark side of globalization, in which progress for some means poverty for others, as jobs and opportunities ebb and flow, securities and currencies fluctuate in value, and the tension between private profit and public good persists. But surely these are risks that we can manage in a world with an America more attuned to its larger purpose and responsibilities.

The final frontier is perhaps the most difficult, but it's also the most important -- and that's the frontier of the human spirit. For too long, people have allowed differences on the surface - differences of color, ethnicity, and gender - to tear apart the common bonds they share. And the human spirit suffers as a result.

Imagine a world in which we saw beyond the lines that divide us, and celebrated our differences, instead of hiding from them. Imagine a world in which we finally recognized that, fundamentally, we are all the same. And imagine if we allowed that new understanding to build relations between people and between nations.

Our goal for the next twenty years should be to finally recognize that our differences are our greatest strength. That's true not only here in America, but in all parts of the world, where we've allowed historic rifts to poison the well of opportunity. They've arisen from the natural prides and passion of humanity. Only when we recognize that - when we respect the human spirit - will we be a great nation and a great world. These are the steps we must take in the next twenty years, as we reach out for the newest frontiers.

In a poem commissioned for the 2002 Olympic Games, Waddie Mitchell wrote, "Since mankind started walking, it's been swifter, higher, stronger, as if pushed by some deep need to keep limits unconfined. Almost thriving, always striving, for things bigger, better, longer, in some unrelenting pursuit of perfection redefined." And that's the America I believe in. An America that takes risks, that dares to be bold. One that looks to the next frontier, ever swifter, higher, and stronger than the day before.

In these next two decades, I am confident that we will make those discoveries in science that will become the next great breakthroughs - and they'll be made here by you and your children. We'll build an educational system that truly unlocks our children's highest potential. And we'll use that potential to transform human understanding and create a world that brings us all closer together. And we'll strengthen the magic of the human spirit and, together, find our future here and in a world beyond.

That is the American way. That's what's made America great. What made our grandparents brave the ocean and undertake the long voyage to our shores. Our streets might not have been paved with gold, but America's future indeed was. And it still can be. But only if we act like Americans again. Only if we bring a higher standard of leadership to Washington. One that looks past the next election to what's best for the next generation...."

1. He's such a .....ah
BOY SCOUT. I mean it. He is so much in the mold of the group of us that are near his age. We were so inspired by JFK, and we all wanted to be in the Peace Corp, or be astronauts, and cure disease and ease poverty. I have been so cynical over the past twenty years, but Clark brings back some of that feeling....and it feels good.

Perfect for the college crowd he was speaking to. I had a chance to go up to NH to hear that speech this morning and I didn't go--now I'm pissed at myself for not going. I've rarely heard a speech like that, and never in person.

You call it fluff. I guess we should take every one of your candidates speeches and excise about 98% of them, don't want any fluff in there.

28. Clark has substance when he wants to
Lofty rhetoric is fine, but is he didn't say what direction he is going in when it comes to globalization - just talks about the pain of readjustment etc. I don't like him being vague on labor issues.

30. Did you see this line?
"We must make sure that globalization helps people around the world, raising living standards and improving the environment everywhere - rather than leading a race to the bottom."

Clark has talked about trade before, his position is not much different than the other candidates really.

Have you seen this:

31. Vision = Ideology.
Ideology = Religion. (in the sense of a set of axioms without foundation outside its own assumptions).

Therefore Vision = Religion.

Politics is all about deciding where you want to go and going there. Where Clark wants to go is identical to where I want to go.

35. Good for you jujube
Did you actually read the entire speech to determine if it was obvious and hollow? If so, I think JFK and MLK also made some pretty hollow speeches back in their time.

If everybody insists on calling any visionary speech that looks forward 20 years and looks beyond the next election cycle hollow, our country and humanity will never get anywhere.

Do you have any evidence to suggest that Clark is repeating the words written to him by his handlers? I don't think so. I on the other hand have listened to Clark talk about issues he was passionate about. He delivered the same vision and hope as in this speech and it was often in impromptu occasions like in answers to audience questions. Maybe it's all a big act, and Clark is a master of deception, but at least I am CONVINCED that Clark writes his own speeched. Furthermore, Clark's demeanor, his serenity and his confidence to speak the truth convince me that he IS the real deal.

I am not a blind cultist. I recognize wisdom and leadership when I see them and Clark has both. Maybe you find Clark too good to be true and you choose not to trust him based on what you expect traditional politicians to be like. That's sad and short-sighted, but it's your choice. But please, don't disparage a great human being purely out of spite.

Just my 2 cents..

38. DIBL,
That was an inspiring post. I can certainly see where people might thing Wes Clark is too good to be true. As for myself, I, too, choose to believe in this visionary man whose love for his country led him to answer the call of 80,000 supporters in the draft movement. Since he answered us with a YES, I have met many many people who know him personally and each has his or her own story of something he did to show how much he cares about people. I truly believe that if we miss this chance to have his leadership, it will be a terrible mistake.

since we all know how much money Clark was able to earn on the speaking circuit---he is a very good writer, and speaker, and doesn't need "handlers" to do his thinking for him. When Clark was appearing at speaking engagements like DePauw University, or Seton Hall, he didn't have any handlers.

36. I think he remembers
but is just too jaded to believe in great visionary leadership that cares about human potential. It's sad, because this is exactly what this country and this world need at the turn of the century. I don't really blame him. The sentiment that politicians are self-serving opportunists detached from the citizens they are supposed to serve is not an uncommon one.
