Daily Kos did story on Bush earpiece last June..so he has used them before
"Thinking of the Supreme Commander GWB, I am reminded of an incident last Saturday when he was praising French President Chirac. I was watching CNN when all of a sudden, I heard another voice speaking Bush's pre-scripted lines before he did. That's right---the other voice would be heard BEFORE Bush's voice. What was that?"

"I thought at the time that that may have been done to give translators a head start on the President's words. Later, I had a call from a reader in Germany who told me she heard the same thing on CNN International including that same voice telling Bush what journalists to call on before he did. We have never heard that before. She asked: 'Is someone controlling the president like a ventriloquist'?"

1. We have way too many circumstantial evidence
problem is... he may, or may not, but if he is... woudl be the first chief executive to ever do this...

As is, future historians will have fun with Bush...

8. I've posted this a million times, but on 9/11 I was watching ABC news
the only station I could get after the towers fell with the transmitters on them. In the speech from the Oval Office in the evening, for the first 30 seconds or so, I could hear the prompter's voice reading the line just before Bush said it. It was some kind of audio error. It sounded like simultaneous translation except it was in English. I posted this on Salon Table Talk at the time. A TT poster from Boston heard it too and tried to get videotape from local stations but couldn't get any. I definitely heard it.

I remember reading about this at the time, but I didn't remember the underlying details (like the date).

Thank you for confirming my memory; It's good to know I'm not the only one who remembers this.

I have a good friend who is an amateur radio enthusiast. He's used his outfit to listen to the drive-thru mics at McDonald's ("Oh my god, Jennifer...did you see that? That guy had a huge boner!"). I asked if he could use his radio to talk to the patrons in the drive-thru. He said it would be easy, but he'd never do it as it is highly illegal.

This gave me an idea. Put a small multifrequency device in close proximity to *. Then have Kerry's camp pipe their own words to it. That would be truly hilarious.

"Let me respond to my opponent. My opponent says he would have done everything differently. Well, would he have deposed rat scrotum from the mole watch? I don't think so!"

7. I'm a ham radio operator and

I think eavesdropping on conversations on McDonal's drive-through mics is completely at odds with the ethos of ham radio, and may be illegal. *

I'll run a quick check and see if any other hams are online now, like DemoTex and NNNOLHI, and see what they think about this.

* Not to criticize your friend, just to inform DUers that hams are supposed to adhere to certain standards of conduct. These include no swearing on the air, no discussion of politics or religion on the air, etc. Hams do a lot of good work during emergencies, helping people contact relatives, coordinating local amateur relief efforts (things like coordinating colunteers with 4WD vehicles to take needed medications, baby formula, firewood, etc., to people trapped in their homes by a blizzard), relaying emergency weather information, and so forth. It's like scouting (BSA or GSA) in many ways.

Maybe your friend has been influenced by hams who don't adhere to the standards of amateur radio. There are some rotten apples out there in the ham barrel.

73!

10. I didn't explain it very well, did I?
He's a very ethical guy. If it is unethical then I probably misunderstood the circumstances surrounding the story.

If anybody were to go strictly by the rules it would be him. I'm most likely to be the one who got it wrong and it was a second-hand story.

16. Surprised you'd say that
You can pick up any frequency you want on a scanner except cell and cordless phones. Most scanner/ham sites have huge lists of frequencies including all the major fast food and retail places. They never have anything interesting to say though. Of course, broadcasting on their freqs would get you in trouble.

Perhaps someone at the debates can bring a frequency counter and a scanner, if the SS will let it in.

But seriously, is it easy to speak the same words as someone else, but lagged a few seconds behind? Translators do it of course, but it seems to me that it would be harder to get right than just speaking extemporaneously. But I suppose speaking along with someone else on a prepared bit might work if he's no good at memorization.

6. It almost seemed like he often was waiting for someone to tell him
something after each question. He would sit their for four or five seconds before saying anthing. Either he was really nervous and slow or someone was feading him the answers and he was waiting for the words.

12. There was another similar event involving a WH staged event...
... in the Oval Office, where wires were crossed and an American TV network (CBS, ABC, or NBC) aired a female voice telling the President what to say before he actually said it. This was reported on abcnews.com's "Daily Notes" (or whatever it's called). I've done a LexisNexis search, however, and can't find anything else mentioning it. Does anyone else remember this?
