How can one counter the "it was a draw" editorials?
My local paper basically took only the flattering quotes from Bush, criticized the tiniest minutae of Kerry's performance, and concluded from that that the whole thing was a draw. How can one best counter that kind of spin?

2. insure that Democrats in your area vote on Nov 2. Volunteer
to make phone calls to remind them.
THEN send in a gloating letter to the editor.

3. Peanut butter, peanut butter, jam on the bread
Look at the scoreboard, see who's ahead

It's really very simple, so simple that even Stupidhead might figure it out if you give him three or four guesses: Kerry went from behind in the polls to leading in the polls. Gallup had Stupidhead up by double digits last week and now has the candidates tied.

Unless your local paper figures that voodoo had something to do with it, the only event of any substance or bearing on the presidential race this past week was the debate. Kerry is now in the lead. Kerry must have done something positive in the debates, perhaps even won them, doncha think? QED. Your local paper is run by desperate partisans.

4. With facts. Write a letter to the editor listing 1) *'s lies/fabrications/
exaggerations
2) Kerry's strengths: his articulate speech, his knowledge of the subject matter without having to fall back on meaningless little sound bites like "it's hard work," his grace under pressure (unlike *'s little meltdowns between every question)
3)*'s inability to deal with that pressure, just like his inability to cope on 9/11, when he froze like a deer in the headlights
4) *'s mixed messages (or mexed missages, whichever...) on Iraq: it's the WMDs! No, it's the madman! Wait, it's nation-building! Nah, hang on- it's democracy for the middle east!

5. Point them toward the National Review Online
The analysis of the debate by Jay Nordlinger, editor of the NR, was one of the first to come out and Nordlinger was sad to say Bush got his ass kicked. Then William F. Buckley came out with an analysis which examined the reasons why Kerry won the debate and why Bush did so badly. Buckley's piece seems at times almost an endorsement of Kerry based on his debate performance.

If the National Review says Bush lost the debate, your paper needs to face reality.

7. Facts are useless--quote the STATS:

Here's one of my LTTEs, for what it's worth:

The first debate was a tie? Says who?

Newsweek's post-debate poll as Kerry leading Bush by two points. Four weeks ago, the magazine had Bush leading Kerry by 11 points. Thats a 13 point swing.

According to a quickie ABC poll, debate viewers judged Kerry the winner 45%-36% (with the rest judging it a tie).

CNN/USA Today/Gallup has Kerry the winner 53%-37%.

A CBS poll of uncommitted voters shows Kerry winning 43%-28%.

Those aren't narrow, inside-the-margin-of-error margins, are they? We're talking double digits, some of 'em approaching 15%.

Course these are all early responses. You know, the ones from before all those poor benighted peons had the benefit of pundit spin like yours.

But if you want to look at the actual facts, apparently a lot of people don't think it was anything like a tie at all.

8. I'm at the point
where I want to tell these people to shove it and I'm voting for Kerry. Know I can't do this but that is how I feel.

9. Remind them of the Black Knight
in the Monty Python film,
THE HOLY GRAIL.
http://www.mwscomp.com/movies/grail/grail-04.htm

King Aurthur chops off both of the Black Knight's arms
and then chops off one of the Black Knight's legs.

BLACK KNIGHT: The Black Knight always triumphs! Have at you! Come on, then.
WHOP
(ARTHUR chops the BLACK KNIGHT's last leg off)
BLACK KNIGHT: Oh? All right, we'll call it a draw.
ARTHUR: Come, Patsy.
BLACK KNIGHT: Oh. Oh, I see. Running away, eh? You yellow bastards! Come back here and take what's coming to you. I'll bite your legs off!

Some draw.
Same draw.

11. Do a Cheney
Hey, if it's good enough for the floor of the Senate it's good enough for your paper--right?

Just tell them that it's that kind of head in the sand thinking that got us into the mess we're in.

12. Generally, it's Republicans who would call it a draw.
The true measure would be the Independents because they are, apparently, independent. Independents gave it to Kerry by a 2 to 1 margin. That's not a "draw."
