Detroit Free Press Endorses John Kerry...
http://www.freep.com/voices/editorials/eprez4_20041004.htm

snip>
Four years ago, George W. Bush promised America he was "a uniter, not a divider." Today, the nation is more divided in more ways than it has been since the turbulent 1960s. The president has failed, or refused, to pursue consensus on America's problems and instigated solutions that have produced results ranging from mixed to disastrous.
<snip

snip>
As president, Bush has plunged America into a costly war under false premises, alienated nations with whom America should be mapping a global strategy against terrorism, managed the most secretive administration in modern times, run up huge budget deficits, deceived Congress on the cost of a Medicare drug plan, and effectively denied women around the world access to information about reproductive health.
<snip

snip>
America needs a new direction, and that can begin only with new leadership. Kerry is not a perfect candidate, but he is a promising alternative to things as they are. The Massachusetts senator is certainly more thoughtful than Bush, more open to new ideas and more sensitive to the issues confronting the middle and working classes. He is as resolute as the incumbent about fighting terrorism but more willing to change strategies that are not effective.
<snip

snip>
On the home front, the Bush administration has not offered an effective strategy to address the loss of manufacturing jobs, which has been felt so hard in places such as Michigan. While the national economy has been sputtering back to life in recent months, hundreds of thousands of good-paying factory jobs with benefits are gone forever, lost to technology, efficiency and low-cost overseas labor. Bush is correct that the ultimate answer to this problem lies in a better-educated work force. But he has offered nothing for the transition, including support for extended unemployment benefits.
<snip

Well written...very well written.

2. ...and it hits all the right points. I think we are going to see quite
a few endorsements from major metro papers in the next couple of weeks! :hi:

3. Nice endorsement
I like the fact that a station with that domain name (freep.com) is endorsing Kerry.

Yeah, I know they have nothing to do with, ummm...you know.

4. I thought it was great too. It used to be funny when I would post
something from the Freep (that's what they call it here) and people would question my political allegiance for posting something from such an "obvious RW source". :hi:

5. Look For More Of These Ahead
While the cable media can spin black & white, the local papers speak realitively freely from corporate pressures and reflect what their readers want to see/hear. This is very big and could cement Michigan for Kerry (nothing's in the bag).

Here's hoping for big endorsements in the weeks ahead in papers in many of the swing states and a red ones as well. The worst marks this regime can get is when editors around the country do the grading, and these are the things voters see right before they go to the polls.

Yes, this is the best news I've heard all weekend.

6. I was very impressed with the content. It said exactly what it needed
to say. The emperor is being disrobed before our very eyes...and I never thought it would happen. :hi:

14. You Can't Deny Truth And Reality
Spin as they may through the national media, this regime can't do it on a local level. Even more telling is how they haven't "bypassed" the national media, like they did in 2002 where Bunnypants would do interviews at local TV stations and with papers that the GOOP used effectively in 2002. But then, they had polling data that showed a pResident with a high popularity rating. Today it's a totally different game, and even more so after the first debate.

What's mindboggling, and I'm sure I'm not alone on this one by any means, is how this regime can hoodwink 40% of the voting population through intimidation, fear and ignorance.

Cheers!

15. The Last Week Is When We'll Need It
Most papers want to "build up the suspense" and readership to peak on the weekend before the election, and that generally means the major endorsements.

I wouldn't be surprised if both Chicago newspapers endorse Bunnypants (Tribune & Hollinger) but it will mean little as Bunnypants will be lucky to pull out 20% of the vote in the Chicago area and 40% statewide (thanks to Alan Keyes).

There's a couple of papers I sure hope will come to our side and soon. St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kansas City Star, Minneapolis Star, Cleveland Plain Dealer and any major paper in a Red state (Rocky Mountain News would be a dream come true).

11. thanks for posting this
I happened to read it this morning when I got to work. I don't always read the FreePress, but I was glad I did today. A very engaging , persuasive editorial. We need all the help we can get to get out the vote in Detroit.

12. Not a surprise, but good to see
And yes, people in Detroit have called it the Freep since long before the word had any other meaning.

13. Always a surprise when any paper comes out for a candidate.
And the Freep has been suspect of late with some of its articles. That's why I canceled my subscription and only peruse online. Big surprise and great news. :hi:
