Bush dares nations to launch missles (nukes?) at America...
He's absolutely insane...

http://www.dailystar.com/dailystar/dailystar/41773.php

<snip>

Bush has promoted the (missile defense) system while campaigning for re-election.

"We want to continue to perfect this system, so we say to those tyrants who believe they can blackmail America and the free world: You fire; we're going to shoot it down," he said during a stop at Ridley Park, Pa., on Aug. 17.

<snip>

Critics of the system, such as Philip Coyle, the Pentagon's former chief of testing, say Bush is wrong.

"Of course we don't have any capability to do that," he said. "For the president to sort of dare them (to fire missiles) is really misleading and even reckless."

3. Bush says "Bring it On!" to countries with nukes? Kerry should find a way
to call him on this in the next debate - even if the debate is about domestic issues.

I've had no fewer than 3 physics professors tell me missile defense was a technical impossibility.

7. it is (nearly) impossible... yet it's deployed. And it still doesn't work

and yet there they are with all the bravado, probably hoping no one will take them up on, but just wanting to sound like John Wayne.

Think of a bullet trying to guide itself to hit another bullet.

12. Common sense tells you it is a moronic idea
First problem is for the system to do any good it must be very reliable and have a high kill rate. The chances of an intercept are not especially good.

A missile defense system would be overwhelmed by a real attack from a real enemy with lots of missiles. Not only would you be faced with the missiles but there would be many decoys launched by the enemy.

No tyrant in their right mind would launch a missile directed anywhere near US interests. This is the one way to guarantee that a significant part of your country would be turned into a nuclear desert. Missile launches leave behind an easily traced trajectory.

Any tyrant in their right mind would stick a nuke in a container and ship it to the US via UPS. Much harder to trace, low chance of detection. Star Wars won't do us any good in this scenario.

18. Even the article
with people working on it said that it isn't yet highly possible to be 100% efficent yet of course Bush is making it seem like he's making us safe. This boy needs a smack back into reality. :eyes: Of course he'll dismiss what any scientist and professional says about it (he is intouch with the almighty after all eh?)

26. not 100%... that's an understatement... it's not even 1%
there has never been an actual sucessful tests, only success in limited (handicapped) tests, and in those the percentage of success is very low.

6. Holy fu*k, the classic Bush "Bring'em on!" statement....
...so shrub wants global nuclear (nuke-you-liar) war, eh? Well, the little sh*t keeps talking like that one of these terra-ists will lobb one over on us, that is for sure! I hope Edwards or Kerry hammer the crap out of Bush/Cheney for making such reckless and misleading statements. That is really a violation of national security secrets in my estimation on the same scale as the false claims that took the U.S. to war with Iraq 18 months ago.

I wish I were a year older, so I could register as an over-seas voter and get the guy out of office.

What kind of idiot *dares* countries to launch offensive strikes at the country he's leading? This is kindergarten behaviour, for heaven's sake!

Edit: Oh wait, that's what he wants, right. Another attack will lift his chances in the election.

I can see it now:

Bush: "Oh Ozzie, buddy, couldn't you blow up another building or two over here? Pretty puh-lease?"
Osama: "'Course, Georgie, if you promise me you'll invade Iran and Syria next year..."

19. How would we know?
Let's say, just after the 3rd debate perhaps, that the White House announces that Korea launched a missile at Seattle. Korea, which has demonstrated it has nukes, has announced missile tests, and with which this administration has been disrupting relations, denies the accusation, but the White House stands resolute, and offers as proof footage of the newly installed anti-missile system launching interceptors, and varies datasheets claiming to prove an intercept, and lots of computer animations of just how it worked, what kind of warhead was probably shot down, etc...

HOW WOULD WE KNOW if this were true or not? How many "security moms" would be so totally freaked out at the idea of a korean nuke striking inside the US that they would rabidly support ANY action by this administration?

While I think missile defense against a single missile can be made to work, I don't believe we are there yet, and I'm sure what's been installed isn't able to do so. When Cheney announced it was being implemented the only reason I could think of doing this was to lay the grounds for something like this.

Thoughts?

20. Where does he get that crap?
The anti-missile boondoggle only works sometimes, and then only if it's a cloudless day, the exact velocity and trajectory of the incoming missile is known in advance, and the enemy is thoughtful enough to put a radio beacon in the nosecone (and not send multiple warheads or put countermeasures in with the warhead).

What a putz this unelected drunk is.

24. This is sort of old news since he first started saying this on Aug. 17
"We want to continue to perfect this system, so we say to those tyrants who believe they can blackmail America and the free world: You fire; we're going to shoot it down," he said during a stop at Ridley Park, Pa., on Aug. 17.

BUT, it still is an important issue that Kerry should jump on. We are deploying a system that has not been operationally tested, which is specifically against Pentagon policy (and probably against the law as well).

they don't even have to come close like Canada or Mexico or Cuba

They could do the Middle East (OIL)

They could nuke China and everyone could accuse the US.
