3. Either the person on the other end of the ear piece or ... |

7. Was that bizarre moment ever discussed--either in print, or on blogs? |
I mean, I know there was a wealth of bizarre moments, a veritable bazaar of bizarre moments, but--did anyone ever offer a possible explanation for it?

9. I saw just one reference to it -- Sidney Blumenthal in the Guardian |
on Oct. 2, but he just said, "With no one interrupting him, he protested, "Let me finish" - a phrase he occasionally deployes to great effect fegore the cowed White House press corps."

10. I think his handlers must have taught him to use that phrase |
whenever someone tries to contradict him.
He may have drifted into using it whenever he himself is confused.

11. that's what I figured. When he feels beleaguered, it's a spontaneous |
thing he says, divorced from any meaning.
My sister, whenever you ask her a question that is going to put her on the spot, always says a long, drawn-out "hmmmmmmmmmm?" As if she hadn't heard what you said. It gives her time to think while you are repeating the question.
