USA Today: "Troops in survey back Bush 4-to-1 over Kerry "
Troops in survey back Bush 4-to-1 over Kerry
By Dave Moniz, USA TODAY

An unscientific survey of U.S. military personnel shows they support President Bush for re-election by a 4-to-1 ratio. Two-thirds of those responding said John Kerry's anti-war activities after he returned from Vietnam make them less likely to vote for him.

In the survey of more than 4,000 full-time and part-time troops, 73% said they would vote for Bush if the election were held today; 18% said they would vote for Kerry. Of the respondents, 59% identified themselves as Republicans, 20% as independents and 13% as Democrats.

<SNIP>

How does this even qualify as journalism?

8. STUPID IDIOTS!
Is what I came up with! At least Kerry went to Nam and fought..so what if he didn't think it was the right thing to do after he knew first hand what was going on.

And I'm not so sure about these polls, anyway..AND ..There are a lot of Veterans who are for Kerry..check out this site that I heard about Sat on The Guy James Show..Rick Bolanos(one of the four Bolanos Brothers who were all serving in VietNam at once..Google his name!) was on and gave a poignant plea for Kerry..

35. Chill, zidzi
I know these people. They're career officers and noncoms. Most of them go to whacko church on post every Sunday so they can be seen there. One such idiot showed up every Sunday wearing a Green Bay Packers tie.

Don't ask me how I know this. Let's just say I wasn't always the enlightened one.

These people do NOT represent anywhere near a majority of military voters. If they were, you wouldn't be hearing about retention problems all the time. The latest thing in the Army is taking in Air Force and Navy personnel who have been passed over for promotion. Four weeks' "filler" basic training, and off they go to Iraq. That's called desperation.

37. You can be absolutely certain about this "poll"
It has no validity whatsoever.

It's just incredible -- I don't think there's a "journalist" out there with an ounce of brains left, they way they keep reporting about these useless things.

And this jackhole bases a whole story on one. What an idiot.

24. No, our troops are NOT idiots
Seriously!

Although I know no one personally who is serving in Iraq or the military, I work with some Military Moms & Dads. None of them support Bush.

The poll was unscientific. Some embedded reporter probably got hooked up with some drunken rednecks fresh in Iraq spewing pro-bush/anti-humanity type stuff. But I think if you find anyone who has been a long-term in Iraq and possibly being forced to serve even longer and I doubt you'll find many bush supporters there.

Please don't say our troops are idiots when the damn poll clearly unscientific. It's as reliably as one of those snap polls you find on CNN, FOX, or some other website where anyone with a computer can vote

49. Bush's military support is shrinking fast
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 10:26 AM by SOS
Also, the War Department forbids polls of active military:

"The Defense Department does not allow soldiers to be polled on their political opinions, and the culture still distrusts anyone who expresses those opinions too overtly. A recent poll of families with current and retired military members showed them supporting Bush 52 percent to 44 percent."

10. They All But Have To Vote For Bunnypants
This was explained very well by a veteran friend...no matter how much they hate the war and blame Bunnypants, voting against him or speaking out against him (who says these people won't vote or will say one thing and vote another) is like being a traitor. They're indoctrinated in all things American, and the current culture in the military all but diefies Bunnypants. We're just seeing the end-results.

The real telling impact of this vote is how active the GOOP is around bases...recruiting military families and making sure those absentee ballots get out (remember all that shit in 2000???). If we can get a handle on how those numbers look, then the picture gets a lot clearer.

That's the deal here...and there are a lot of veterans who are really pissed by the slime boaters and Bunnypants going AWOL (the veterans I talk to don't mince their hate for the manchild these days).

There's one element that is different between the Clinton military and the BFEE one. I remember reading, quite regularly, in the run-up to the Iraq invasion the troops were all but forced to give a loyalty oath to the boy king and if you didn't show "respect" you got a real rough time.

Plus, look what this regime did to Jessica Lynch...when this regime all but destroyed her for speaking her mind, the word got around Iraq real quick.

.. those that chose to respond were 59% republican, 20% indies (which are usually republicans), and 13% democrats. Hmmm that means that 25% of them support Kerry, not bad considering the lopsided makeup of the parties in that stupid survey.

And email survey like that is so worthless.. that's like touting an online poll. What stupid story. Hey, at least they point out that the people responding are mostly upper ranking, high paid officers probably not the guys who are taking all the crap on the ground in Iraq; (those guys are probably slightly busy and unable to take part in an email survey at the moment, they;re just trying to stay alive).

40. Or ...
They have this on their webpage under "Truth About Kerry"

"THE TRUTH ABOUT JOHN KERRY

The Republicans would like you to believe that Senator John Kerry is soft regarding the defense of our country. That is part of the administrations attempt to keep the TRUTH away from the American public. The Truth is that John Kerry is one of the strongest supporters of America’s military. He voted for the largest increase to the defense budget (2002) since the early 1980’s.

the increase provided $355 billion dollars for the defense department for 2003

it included $71.5 billion for procurement including $4 billion for the Air force’s F-22

$3.5 billion for the Joint Strike Fighter

$279.3 million for the E-8C Joint Stars (JSTARS) aircraft

a 4.1% pay increase for military personnel"

They also have a "Truth About bush"..

" Ps. 140: 33 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders poison is under their lips.

That pretty much sums up the Bush Administration. An administration that is afraid to speak about the issues and instead spew poisonous lies to the American populace in order to effectuate a smoke screen to cover up their dismal deficiencies. Our country is in dire straits with this administration. Here are the true facts not fiction, lies, deceit or otherwise.

There are approximate 3 million americans out of work."

36. In another USAToday recent article...
A Military Times survey last December of 933 subscribers, about 30 percent of whom had deployed for the Iraq war, found that 56 percent considered themselves Republican...

Enlisted personnel, however - a disproportionate number of whom are minorities, a population that tends to lean Democratic - are more evenly split. Professor Feaver estimates that about one third of enlisted troops are Republicans, one third Democrats, and the rest independents, with the latter group growing.

38. Say what?
I am just wondering how many of you are currently in the Army and serving in Iraq?
I must start off by saying that I did not and do not agree with the invasion of Iraq.

I have been here since February.
Soldiers are allowed to support whome ever they want with out recourse. We have many open free discusions about everything going on with the election. I deal with the enlisted soldiers, I don't hang out with officers. Soldiers are not afraid of reprisals for voicing their opinions. These guys are strong and opinionated and will tell you exactly what they think. And I am here to say that yes 3 out of 4 soldiers support the current administration.

We sure as h*ll do not appreciate reading that you think we are idiots because we are using the freedoms that we fight for every day to express our point of view.
I will also tell you that my wife, my mom, my inlaws, they will all vote against Bush because I am over here. Doesn't matter what I say, they will not change their minds.

Many many young soldiers do know why they are here.
No soldier was told he was coming over here for only 3 months.
Everyone is told its a one year tour with the possibility of extension. And very very few units have been extended.

44. And I and the US Military Times and the Army Times and my US soldier
husband and his entire unit disagree with you.

3 out of 4 enlisted troops DO NOT support bush.

As the Military Times survey showed, 1/3 enlisted lean Republican, 1/3 lean Democrat, with 1/3 Independants.

As the Army Times survey showed, only 56% of active duty troops support bush. That is NOT "3 out of 4 soldiers".

So WHY are you there?

It sure as hell wasn't from any "threat", imminent or otherwise...it sure as hell isn't from any "WMD"...it sure as hell isn't any "ties to 911" or "ties to al Qaeda" or "ties to terrorism" and it sure as hell isn't any "humanitarian intervention".

And if you think tens of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians, 1100 dead US troops, $200 billion, increased danger from terrorism, and total loathing of the US worldwide is worth "spreading democracy" when the nation you're "spreading" it in never asked you to do so, and when the vast majority (98% last polls) of the Iraqis view you as an OCCUPIER and NOT a liberator, then sorry but you ARE an idiot. Not for expressing your opinion, but for having such an opinion.

And YES soldiers WERE told they'd only be in Iraq for a few weeks. My husband and his entire brigade (4thID) were told this. And I saw him 16 months later. AFTER his unit was extended. And he was one of the lucky ones who made it out before the 2nd extension.

Yes, NOW they're telling you it'll be at least one year.

Hope you're active duty and not NG or Reserves...coz bushCartel are now changing the NG and Reserve rules; CONTINUOUS COMBAT TOURS as long as no individual tour is more than 23 months at a time.

That means they can force you into 23 months in Iraq and 1 month back in the USA then 23 months in Afghanistan then 1 month back in the USA then 23 months back in Iraq...

And good luck with the stop-loss. Hopefully your MOS isn't under one and won't be, and hopefully you don't have that 8 years service requirement after you leave the army...if they allow you to leave.

Oh, and bush's cutting veterans' benefits for the third time, don't worry about that. Nope, you just go ahead and continue to support an administration that lies you to continous war and cuts your benefits. And hell with anyone who would dare call you an IDIOT for doing so!

And come back home SAFE!!! Or I'll knock your damn fool head off.

45. not sure where folks get their info
Lynn,
just a couple things I want to point out;

I find it hard to believe that 100% of your husband’s unit will vote for Kerry. Take any group of American People, short of a political rally, and you will not find 100% agreement, its just not going to happen. I just want to respectively disagree with you here unless someone has done an actual poll of everyone in the unit.

I am not sure what you mean by “Army Times survey showed, only 56% of active duty troops support bush”. According to the poll in the current issue of the Army Times (www.armytimes.com) 72% of active duty Soldiers and 73% of reserve Soldiers would vote for the President, 17% and 18% respectively for Senator Kerry. They also broke down the results based upon those that have been deployed versus those that have not and the ones that have been deployed are 4-5% more likely to vote for Bush. As far as soldiers approve of how the Administration is handling the war in Iraq only 60% and 63% respectively approve.

I have a hard time agreeing entirely with the “it sure as hell isn't any "humanitarian intervention"” statement. We are doing a lot for the Iraqi people. The media is totally ignoring what is actually happening over here. Vast majorities of the people we are fighting against are only here because we are. They are not local Iraqis and they don’t have local support. The insurgents are the ones targeting the locals, not the US Military. If the President AND Congress believed the intelligence reports then they did believe the WMD cause. Even if we had found stockpiles of WMD I still don’t believe that the invasion was justified.
I agree it had nothing to do with AQ or terrorism. But the over throw of the country is complete. I don’t agree with us entering the country but we ARE here now. We need to do something more then just pull out completely. We are here and we must ensure that the country can stand on its own two feet. And yes the people here do want that. I still get waves from people and their thanks for coming here. The media isn’t showing any of this back home. The decision to enter Iraq is long past. What will we do tomorrow is the question that needs to be answered. So far I haven’t seen much of a plan on anyone’s part.

To date the war has cost 120 billion, not sure why people keep throwing out the 200b number.

The 4th ID was told to plan for a long hard fight. They were part of the initial invasion force and majority of the unit moved over via ship. They spent too long sitting in the Med waiting for Turkey to let them enter the country via that route. Your husband may have told you he would only be gone for a few months but the initial force wasn’t given any sort of time frame. If his unit was indeed told that they would only be gone for a few months then there is a real problem with the Chian of Command in the Unit that needs to be addressed. No one knew how long the war itself would take. There wasn’t any sort of end game planned for after we took over the country. As soon as they (Pentagon) could they started working on a rotation plan. They want units to only do 12-month rotations. They figured we would have more international support and when that didn’t come about they had to use more US Soldiers.

The rules regarding deployment of Reserve and Guard forces are governed by law. Congress passed the bill shortly after 9-11 and the President signed the bill into law. The law gives the President the authority to activate the Reserve or Guard for up to one day less then two years during any four-year period (http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/html/123510.htm). It takes Congress to go beyond this time period. . The President may have pushed for the passage of the bill but the Congress supported it.
There are Reservists that got activated shortly after 9-11 to provide Airport Security or other such Homeland Security missions. These were anywhere from 6-12 month missions. Since completing these missions the Soldiers have moved on to other Units. Their new Units are getting activated and mobilized to deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan, or the Balkans. These soldiers cannot do over 24 months total time even if they volunteer to do so. Out of 30 soldiers in my unit 3 of them fall within this group. They will be leaving Iraq 4 months before the rest of the unit because their two-year activation period is up. For Units that are getting activated outside of this two-year period it takes Congressional authority to do so. And this is a total activation period, not “CONTINUOUS COMBAT TOURS”, or “That means they can force you into 23 months in Iraq”. It is the total time on active duty so it includes all time spent at the mobilization station doing predeployment training and demobilization activities.

The entire unit falls under Stoploss as soon as they get their Warning Order for deployment. It isn’t MOS specific. Stoploss is in effect until 90 days after the unit returns home. I am currently 6 months PAST my retirement date. If I hadn’t been deployed I would be a Veteran now, but I am not.

“bush's cutting veterans' benefits for the third time, don't worry about that. Nope, you just go ahead and continue to support an administration that lies you”
How exactly has the President cut veteran’s benefits? And if benefits have been reduced this again takes an act of Congress signed by the President to go into effect.

“And come back home SAFE!!! Or I'll knock your damn fool head off”
Thank you!!! J

I am not trying to support either side in this post. I just want people to know that some of what is getting said is not accurate. I read as much as my time allows. I go to many, many, many websites. I try and research as much as possible. I have only been reading threads on this website for a couple months. This is the first thread that I have ever felt needed a response.
There are many soldiers that do NOT like the President and don’t agree with how his administration is handling the War on Terror but they are even more scared by their other choices. I know some folks that are not going to vote at all because they do not like the choices that they have.
If you believe that a soldier serving in Iraq or Afghanistan who chooses to vote his own mind is an idiot or naïve and its your responsibility to vote for them I just gotta say I don’t believe that you don’t deserve the right to vote. If you believe that the War on Terror is the most important consideration for this election then you should let the ones that are doing the actual fighting decide who will be the Commander in Chief.

54. I would tend to agree
I never did a scientific study, or anything of that nature, of course. However, being a stout progressive, an constantly hearing about how the military was solidly conservative (if not reactionary) I regularly discussed politics with my fellow servicemembers. I'd say at least 35-40% of the people "I knew" considered themselves Democrats or liberal. That might have something to do with the worldview of the types of people that joined the USCG though, I don't know.

42. My unscientific survey says that Dave Moniz is a RW shill...
I remember when that shit was cutting his teeth at conservative South Carolina newspapers. Hmmm, maybe my poll isn't so unscientific (considering empiricism and all)

Moniz has always had a hard on for khaki and olive drab. Too bad that he doesn't show the same enthusiasm for journalism.

58. Thousands more?
How can you justify that statement? Sen Kerry has said that he plans on increasing the number of soldiers deployed to Iraq not decreasing the number?
And again I can not believe that you feel that a soldier serving in Iraq is an idiot. If anything who better should know what is going on over here?

71. I am a Viet Nam veteran.
It's one thing to be a fool. It's another thing to go and stand in a line that has a sign above it..."FOOLS PLEASE STAND IN THIS LINE."

What the hell don't you and anbody else over there who would vote for this retard, get? He lied to you, to us, and the world. There was no more need to go there than there was to go to Scottland.

He pulled inspectors out of Iraq who were pleading with him for at least 4-6 more weeks because they were receiving cooperation. They were confident they were making progress. We had no fly zones, patrolling all the skies over Iraq. We had satellites that could read the second hand on Saddam Husseins' watch. Hussein was like an ant under glass.

Bush went to Iraq as a revenge trip!! Hussein tried to kill Bush Sr. That's why he could not be deterred, would not be deterred, even when his own expert on counter intelligence told him Iraq had nothing to do with 911. His own Treasury Secretary said Bush is "like a blind man in a room full of deaf people." What the hell else do you need to hear?

He has only one interest. His rich corporate millionaire friends who can give him campaign contributions. He's the first President in 75 years to have lost jobs. Clinton created 23 million. He's LOST over a million.

We now have the largest deficit in the history of the world. When he took office, he had a SURPLUS! He's cut over a billion dollars from the Veteran's Health Care in his budget. 300,000 veterans are waiting to have his claims processed! Not only that, when the need couldn't be greater, he's cutting the number of employees who process those claims.

42% of the time he's been in office, he's spent at his vacation ranch. You're up to your ankles in sand, taking daily gunfire, driving over roadside bombs and he's in Crawford, Texas playing golf or vacationing at his ranch. That's who you want for your President?
He's only given about 5 press conferences the entire time he's been in office. It's unprecedented! You know why? Because he doesn't want to answer any questions. You know how many his father gave? OVER A HUNDRED!

Bush is a moron. He's a Hell's Angel in the world's most powerful position. He wouldn't miss a bite of his supper if someone told him another one of you guys died in Iraq.

Wake your fucking ass up! Your fighting is not to defend America. You're fighting to cover up for the bastard that sent you there.

You have one way, and one way only to come out of that hell hole and that is to help elect the man who knows what war is. Not some rich, erudite, coke sniffing draft dodger who was drunk under a table in an NCO club somewhere while others were shipping off to take his place in Viet Nam.

Kerry will get the mulit-lateral assistance needed to take the targets off your backs, get the Iraqi's involved properly in their own country's defense, and BRING YOU GUYS HOME!

WAKE UP. Vote for the man who has the intelligence, world credibility and leadership ability to end this. Not for the man who put you there to die. John Kerry has been on the foreign relations committee of the U.S. Congress for 20 years. He is a President, not a chest thumping, swaggering punk that is only in the White House because of the Supreme Court.

Listen to Air America Radio on the internet if you can. Get some facts. Understand, WE'RE TRYING TO HELP YOU!!!!!

51. Doesn't surprise me. Military ALWAYS votes Repub...but this year
more of the military guys and gals are voting Dem than ever before. Protests by military personnel and their families are taking place here in the U.S.

Bush cut veteran's benefits since sending them off to war, and he sent to war without armor? WTF? One guy's MOM had to buy her son's armor; she found a place on the Internet that sold body armor, so she spent several hundred dollars buying and shipping it. She's a working middle class mom. Shameful. Really.

52. If they don't appreciate who is trying to help them and who lied
them to "death", then I guess they will have no trouble continuing to fight the corporate wars. I think there are a lot more troops and their families who have had it with Bush than this survey indicates.

56. USAToday is a RAG
but this "poll" doesn't surprise me. The slaves (many from places like Lyndie England's neck of the woods) have always voted to keep their masters in power.

Remember the surprise in "Wizard of Oz" was that the flying monkeys were actually grateful to Dorothy for killing their witch. It was a surprise because even in the 40s (or whenever the film was made) we expected the same behavior as what's reflected in this poll.

Self-preservation, you know. People get assigned to various places, and in some your physical integrity is more at risk than others, and there's people deciding that. Yeah, I'm paranoid.

60. How ridiculous to have this poll... The media does not understand that
... it is a violation of the Code of Military Justice for an active member of the armed forces to criticize a sitting President. Given the conduct of this Administration in suppressing dissent, those 13% that came out in support of Kerry were risking quite a lot considering they could not hide their identities.

This survey means nothing. They weren't selected at random; it's not scientific at all. This is the same thing as my saying, "90 percent of my friends are voting for Kerry." Who cares?
