Cheney has been as insulated from direct criticism as bush
He has a short fuse, as shown by the Leahy incident, and all Edwards needs to do is push him enough for his true colors to show for all to see.

1. Agreed, but he's nobody's fool...

I think he'll have a pretty good fight for Edwards, and I'd imagine he's not as totally clueless as his boss. Should be entertaining, if nothing else.

3. Well past time, I'd say.

Time for a little accountability.

7. I really hate to say it but
Cheney is going to do well. He's the best the neocons have and a true pro - in terms of mean spin. And he has the facts at his fingertips; things Edwards isn't privy to or just doesn't know. Like the difference between Sammara, Sadr-City, and Fallujah. These are discussion points that if you don't know the gritty details, could trip one up. Edwards has not been known to have an affinity for the military nor foreign affairs. I'm praying he can pull it off but I'm skeptical. Plus the moderator will be out to get him (is it Gwen Ifil?) and trip him up. If Edwards wins this though, we are smooth sailing from here on out. If I turn out to be wrong, please castigate me.

8. Edwards just needs to hold his own...
I just hope Cheney pushes the envelope of being nasty. It would be nice for the public to see him lose his cool.

13. He's actually as much of a failure as shrub
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 10:10 PM by aldebaran
Just not as visible.

He's been at the public trough his whole life, almost ran Halliburton into the ground despite his connections.

If Edwards is half the litigator we think he is, Mr Bigtime will be hamburger.

16. Cheney can be smooth, and appear knowledgeable...
But all Edwards has to do is showcase his abilities as a thinker and speaker. Even if he simply remains on equal footing with Cheney, it will be a victory, as there will be no GOP superiority.

However, look for Edwards to do **very** well. I say this without being overconfident.

9. Good point. defining the origin of a bully - a chicken or egg thing?
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 09:57 PM by shance
Does Cheney have a short fuse because hes an insulated bully....or is he an insulated bully because he has a short fuse?

:)

10. Cheney has a short fuse
and I think must be pissed at the way things are going and then out comes Edwards with that great big smile and his friendly and easy-going ways. He has a way of saying what needs to be said in such a nice way. I think that alone is going to drive Cheney nuts! Like those days when I'm cranky and someone in the other office is humming, it just grates on me.

11. Yes he's been shielded, and also was in his job, but don't underestimate
him. He's run with a tough crowd for a long time, and he knows how to stick the knife in and twist it, and still have a sneer/grin on his face at the same time.

I agree, if Edwards can get him riled, he will do an exceptional job. But it ain't gonna be easy.

I heard David Boies on Olberman tonight. He said Edwards is a good trial attorney, and he knows exactly how to draw out a whitness who is lying. I agree with that, and Edwards didn't win all those cases by being bad at his job!

We'll see tomorrow!!!

14. Any bets
Any bets on how many times Cheney uses the phrase "the President and I?" I'd put the over-under at 50. He has to get his apparent competence to rub off on Bush to make up for the Thursday debacle. I'd like to seem someone ask him directly whether Bush sets the agenda, or if he does, and see him try to answer with a straight face.

Is this debate going to look more like Cheney-Lieberman or Quale-Bentsen, format wise? Will it be a round table where Edwards can question Cheney, or will they be pehind podiums again?
