Bruce S. Ticker

George W. Bush could well be going bonkers…and that would be the most powerful signal anyone can send that he will be a one-term president.

In fact, if he has gone crazy - beyond his usual level of lunacy - it probably results from incredible pressure rooted in his full expectation that he is headed for defeat.

For the record, it is too hard to tell who will win the election on Nov. 2, but Bush's debate performance offered evidence that he is in deep trouble.

I watched it on C-Span which broadcast the entire 90-minute debate on a split screen allowing viewers to view both candidates simultaneously - as one spoke and the other listened.

Before John F. Kerry could finish his first sentence, Bush was making the grimaces for which he became notorious. He was angry, testy, impatient and bored, of course. He bobbed his head in all directions.

1. Does he fidget with a couple of ball bearings
and rant about strawberries? Doesn't matter. Bush is barking mad already.

It is like Alzheimer's but kicks in much earlier in life.

3. I think you're right, & perhaps pressure triggers the onset.
This caught my eye:

"A logical explanation for Bush's behavior is the pressure of a contested campaign in which, public polls aside, he is very vulnerable. What's more, if the Democrats kick him out of the White House, who knows what irregularities they may discover and expose them to the public? If Kerry and crew discover that criminal offenses might have been committed, they will have the power to prosecute any suspects.

"Or, if Bush gets re-elected yet the Democrats retake both houses of Congress, he could find himself facing impeachment proceedings."

This administration is already covering its tracks. The coWard forced an early retirement for the current presidential archives administrator.
