Charles Rangel (D) and his military draft bill |
|
I don't get how this is supposed to help Democrats. With all the talk and rumors of a new draft it will certainly come out to jane sixpack that it is a Democrat plan. For now it seems muddied enough that Bush appears to be the fall guy but what if the truth gets out big time before the election. This seems to have a big backfire potential.

2. From what I've heard about the Bill |
|
Rangel made it airtight that everyone, no matter what your status in life is, would have to be drafted. This would prevent kids using their parents influence and status to get them out of the war.
Rangel is probably one of the most fervant anti-war politicians in DC. I think he put together this plan maybe in hopes that it'll be his bill that is used when they negotiate the draft and it'll get rejected because it's designed to draft everyone no-matter what and repukes aren't about to alienated their rich supporters

were protest bills in early 2003. Even their sponsors have said they wouldn't vote for their own legistlation. Plus, both bills will expire at the end of this Congressional year.
But today, given the overwhelming problems in Iraq, it's becoming ever more certain that the draft might see light of day. It's doubtful that these two bills would have any affect on that decision because if the draft is needed, it would more than likely fall under the current law for conscription.

We may know it but to hear the shocked responses on the news and on campuses it appears that the protest may not be going as planned. If word gets out that Democrats did this as a protest or scare tactic it may not return the desired value.

your comment reveals you are not.
Rangel is facing reality, and most Dems just don't see it. Our military is stretched; just listen to the man's arguments. He's ahead of this debate thank goodness. It's going to happen, and Charlie is right. Wake up people.
