Why the Christian Right is Wrong

I'm reposting this from another thread. I'm not sure who the original author is.

"The Christian Right is of course a heresy and has nothing to do with historical Christianity and the gospels. Most rightwing Christians don't even read the bible. Witness the slubb who started this thread. If God is for Bush, then God is for avoiding service in Vietnam, cocaine use, privileges for the sons of rich families, and the inability to speak English.

Here is why the Christian Right is apostate:

1. It interprets the bible literally, leading to absurdities and contrary to historical Christianty's view of exegesis.

2. It emphasizes the OT, mostly for political gain, usually to bash minorities such as gays and women, and thus ignores everything that the NT teaches about Christians not being bound by the Law.

3. It ignores the gospel message denouncing the accumulation of wealth, helping the poor and needing, and supporting social justice, in order to prop its support of unregulated capitalism, exploitation of the poor, and love of money.

4. If defends capitalism no matter how incompatible with Christian values, since essentially, fundies are part of a rightwing political movement that attacks the poor and powerless and supports the wealthy and powerful.

5. It generally shows contempt for the poor, calling them "lazy," while currying favor with the powerful and wealthy.

6. It emphasizes the denunciation of sexual sins not in the gospel in order to divert attention from the gospel message of love and responsibility to one's neighbor, and its clear message denouncing the rich.

There is more to this syndrome -- the ascribing to the bible of an anti-abortion message, which nowhere exists in the bible -- but this is the gist of it. Your support of Bus makes me worry about where you are in this false gospel movement. I hope you rethink what you stand for."

3. My problem with them is...
The constant use of the phrase, "This country was founded on a Judeo-Christian ethic." Those guys wouldn't know a Jewish ethic if one waltzed up and bit them in the ass.

Further, their love for Israel has nothing to do with how much they like Jews; it's about Biblical Prophecy, and Revelations specifically. This alone should be enough to scare the shit out of a rational thinker.

Let's think of some other theocratic literalists; The Taliban leap to mind. Oh, yeah; there was that whacky Jim Jones character.

The Christian right is neither; a cabal of cultist freaks, IMHO.

4. i love the idea of branding them as "apostate."
it's a message that needs to be broadcast over and over and over.

i don't think there's any way jesus would have embraced republican doctrine. he wasn't big on pharisees or the publicly pious who look down on their neighbors.
