Preemptive thread: Someone's circulating fraudulent "Dean" email
Don't Be Fooled By Cheap Imitations

In the final nine days before the Iowa Caucuses, we're going to be showered with all kinds of distortions and tricks that try to diminish the enthusiasm you've built for this campaign. For instance, today a fake email advertising "Paid internships for Dean" is circulating. It's a fraud, and was not sent by Dean for America.

All official DFA email comes from a deanforamerica.com address, and at the bottom says "Paid for and maintained by Dean for America." Anything else is a fraud, and should be deleted. However, an email can be made to look authentic with the disclaimer and can even apear at first glance to come from a Dean for America address. If you have any doubts about the authenticity of an email because of its content or tone, forward it to us at blog@deanforamerica.com.

1. DFA shouldn't say anything else is a fraud
I can make an email say it came from those places too. Anyone can do it.

5. It can be done
My point is that someone can make the email say it's coming from @deanforamerica.com and say Paid for by...

It is still possible to spoof that.

10. Yuck......some folks just can't play straight.
I guess things will be testy for a few more weeks. Will a good anti-virus/anti-spam filter eliminate this to some extent?

6. No shit, but it would be fraudulent unless you work for DFA.
DFA is right and you are wrong - unless you are an employee of or authorized agent for DFA. Are you?

8. That's correct
But as you have seen, people are willing to commit fraud.

That the advisory not to regard any e-mail as legitimate unless it came from deanforamerica.com ignores the fact that fraudulent e-mail can be spoofed to appear as if it came from deanforamerica.com. He was warning that just because the sender is somebody@deanforamerica.com, that still doesn't guarantee it's legitimate.

Thinks of all the spam you get from yahoo and hotmail and lycos, do you think those companies are allowing spammers to operate? No, people are spoofing the sender address.
