Kerry promotes stem cell research - Alex Keaton switches parties

John Kerry on Monday accused President George W. Bush of restricting potentially lifesaving stem cell research because of "extreme right-wing ideology" and underscored his own strong support for research that polls show has widespread backing.

The Democratic senator spoke in a high school gymnasium alongside Canadian actor Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson's disease, and others who told emotional stories how disease have impacted their lives. They urged Kerry's election because of the stem cell issue.

"It's gotten so bad that even Alex Keaton would have shifted parties and voted for me this year," Kerry joked.

Recent polls have shown as many as 80 per cent of respondents favouring stem cell research.
