Bremer and Rumsfeld come clean
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 07:57 AM by npincus
Bremer: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1520&ncid=1520&e=1&u=/afp/20041005/pl_afp/us_iraq_bremer_041005122056

The former US governor of Iraq has admitted the United States "never" had enough ground troops in Iraq to establish firm control of the country, directly contradicting assertions by President George W. Bush and top Pentagon officials that the US military had what it needed to win the war.

Rumsfeld: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1520&ncid=1520&e=4&u=/afp/20041004/pl_afp/us_iraq_rumsfeld_qaeda_041004235855

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he has seen no "strong, hard evidence" linking former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein web with Al-Qaeda, backing away from his pre-war assertions that contacts between the two went back over a decade.

According to C-SPAN this morning, Rumsfeld is backing off from those comments, now talking about the 'powerful connections between Sadaam Hussein and Al Qaeda'- I guess he got taken to the wood shed... maybe Condi put on her black rubber pantyhose, leather mask and beat him with her cat-o-nine tails.

I wonder how the Chimp Administration will spin Bremer's comments. I still can't understand how any sensible, reasonable person can support this crew. There HAVE to be more of us out there.

1. Rumsfield got a call from Cheney and has backed off his statement
He said he was just reading something from the CIA that was in his pocket. Makes you feel good that we have Sec of Def who just reads whatevers in pocket at the time without understanding what the content means.

5. That's the problem with lies. You tell enough of them and you
can't keep 'em straight.

4. This is a Bremer pre-emptive strike
This is Bremer saying he sees Iraq heading straight down the toilet and he isn't going to be the scapegoat.

Bremer didn't just stab Bush in the back, he drove the spear all the way through.

6. Win war vs win peace
As sick as I am of the phrase, "winning the peace," it's appropriate here. They had enough troops to win the war, as they actually won it with the exact number of troops they had. But they didn't have enough to secure the country. On Charlie Rose last night, one of the guests pointed out that the military now admits privately that their biggest mistake was in not securing weapons stockpiles, which were looted as soon as people figured out that the Americans "didn't know where anything was."

And yeah, Rummy got taken to the woodshed. Cheney said to him, "Git mah belt, boy!"

7. I smell something fishy...
After Bremmer and Rumsfeld admit these errors, do you think Shrub will admit "mistakes were made" at his "major speech"? I predict his speech will include the line, "Mistakes were made, but it was still the right thing to go to Iraq."

Something just doesn't seem right about this. Time for an October surprise?
