NPR helps Bush AGAIN this morning.
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 08:43 AM by AP
At the half-hour news summary, they tell us that Kerry is holding a town hall in a tiny school in a tiny town in Iowa. The quote: the school's principle, a big supporter, who says he can't believe Kerry, with four weeks to go, would be spending time in his tiny school. End of story. No commentary on Kerry's purpose (there's a reason he's in that small town) and no quotes from Kerry or any of Kerry's press people.

Next story: Bush gives address. Followed by actual clips of Bush speaking. Followed by comment that Bush calls Kerry's foreign policy proposals dangerous.

Could NPR be much more unbalanced?

17. Which will be followed by 15 minutes on JK's practices tomorrow
And was proceeded by 15 minutes on voter viewpoints on the place or religion and faith in politics yesterday.

Would you prefer 30 second sound bites?

3. Oh, but they also have Garrison Keilor....
And "Car Talk", and that GENIUS of comedy, Mike Feldman, so that redeems them!

<sarcasm>

I had to come in early to do an uplink, so I was spared today's dribblings from National PUTSCH Radio...

20. Lake Wobegone.... did you
... happen to catch it sunday night?
Wow, did they poke fun at bush at every opportunity- i laughed out loud so many times-

Garrison Keilor clearly heard the 'de-bait' and found some RICH humor there-

Dian Rheem (sp) also often makes some really good points, and prestnts some very good interviews-

While i sometimes feel 'convinced' that they've been bought off by the right, i then hear something that makes me sure they're leanin hard to the left-... perhaps they are the closest thing to 'balanced' we have?

26. Well, you see, that's just it.
So many of us are willing to give them a "pass' on their RNC propaganda that comes on in the morning and afternoon in exchange for shows by people who actually ARE either Moderate or Liberal.

"OK, so we've been following Rove's blast faxes all week...Think it's time to let Diane have Franken on her show? The natives are getting wise to us...."

And while I thought "We're not in Lake Wobegon anymore" was a good piece, I'd rather READ Garrison Keillor than fight to stay awake LISTENING to his mush-mouthed droning...

5. NPR also announce * will be a major foreign policy address this week
Since * failed to articulate his foreign policy without a script in front of him, a foreign policy speach written by the WH spin doctors is in order.

But again, NPR wants to emphasize the * is focus on LARGER issues--apparently actually presenting those issues in the context of a debate where all of 'Merica is watching is less important to the new NPR starched shirts.

6. I wish people
Would stop bitching and moaning about the media whenever an outlet airs or publishes a story that doesn't exactly fit with the narrow perspective held by the complainer.

Of course there's plenty of room for meaningful criticism of the media, including the structure, the pace and individual members, but the kneejerk refrain here at DU (The media supports Bush and is trying to get him re-selected) or over in freeperville (The media supports Kerry and is trying to get him elected) speaks volumes about mindlessness.

7. Yes, but they're right about NPR....
I used to be the world's biggest NPR fan and supporter. I still listen, but it just keeps getting worse and worse. Since I refuse to watch TV, NPR, newspapers, and the internet are my main sources of news and entertainment. Alas, NPR news is becoming ever more blatantly biased toward the right wing's viewpoint.
:-(

I also used to support them but haven't in about 6 years. They are so far in Bush's pocket (being nice here;-) ) they don't even KNOW when they're being biased.
That reminds me of an email I have to send to Markeplace, responding to their commentator's glowing review of the economy yesterday with NO reply or opposing view.

10. Perhaps you don't understand what messageboards are for?
One of the purposes they serve is outlet for us to bitch and moan sometimes, if we are so inclined.

Some bitching and moaning may be more worthy than others, but still . . . the outlet is here for me and others, and for that I am grateful.

Maybe some people post things I wouldn't, and vice-versa I'm sure, but this forum is for a variety of things, one of which is to be able to write about what is bugging us.

12. Maybe you are confusing broad generalization with specific examples
So, if you disagree that NPR's Morning Edition for October 5 was not pro-Bush, then specifically tell us why...folks here will listen.

Most probably, trying to defend and extend a specific example at Free Republic is likely to generate a different type of argument.

Here, you will find specific examples with some commentary that the examples fit a larger pattern or trend.

13. What is mindless is a refusal to look at evidence. When a poster
includes evidence, you're free to examine it alone or in conjunction with other evidence that other posters or sites have provided about a given source. But it's unfair to complain that others who find evidence of bias and post it are "bitching and moaning."

Maybe you have not been around long enough to see all the incidents. You may want to check out sites such as F.A.I.R., MediaMatters, and others who have conducted systematic studies.

I'll add my little bit of evidence to the many other bits people have posted here and elsewhere about the declining standards at NPR: until recently many stories introduced "President" Bush and "John" Kerry. It is a subtle way of diminishing the opponent's stature, just as calling men "Mr. Smith" but calling their professional female peers "Mary" demeans the women's status. I've never heard NPR introduce "George" Bush and "Senator" Kerry. Everyone would immediately know that the lack of parallel forms is inappropriate.

11. I like Diane Rehm though
She is about as fair as can be, and she can subtly smackdown the RW callers. Her show is worth 2 hours of my morning as I push my pencil...

I will probably throw in a Shostakovich CD during that Bush segment - anything about Bush other than his being lambasted in the debate causes me turn off the radio.

21. This is the third day in a row that they've done this.
They'll spin Bush's pathetic words for him, then play the clip of Bush speaking, usually making an attack on Kerry.

Then, they'll paraphrase (weakly) a Kerry response, but NO clip from Kerry.

It couldn't be more obvious.

Last night I almost cracked up the car listening to their glorification of *crazy* fundies speaking in tongues and glorifying our great leader. There was an hysterical (and I don't mean funny), sequence of them praying fo Ted Kennedy to find God.

I hope they'll "balance" this sequence with some great soundbites from pagan rituals for Kerry!

29. That was the most bizarre piece of radio I've heard in a long time
First, we had some religious crazies who supported Bush. Then some religious crazies who were voting for Kerry. Then a really wacky "independent" going on about Millennial Jews. Every one of those people scared the crap out of me.

Why would NPR interview them? Six people meet in a church basement every week to engage in superstitious nonsense, and they get 20 seconds to talk about who THEY think should be the most powerful man in the world? WTF am I missing here?

Did anyone else hear that? Jesus. You'd better spend your time interviewing schizophrenia patients about what they think of Kerry and Bush. My apologies to those who have relatives who are (or are themselves) religious crazies or schizophrenia patients. But what a waste of my time.

30. Did you hear them speaking in "tongues"? We did better in our 12th grade
drama classes with our "jibberish" exercises.

What a joke!

OMG, what if they read this and start praying for ME????

AAAAAARRRGGGGHHHH

Actually, I thought they were all Bush supporters (this was ATC, not Morning Ed.), and they said that they would pray for Kerry even MORE if he were elected, because it's God's doing, and there must be some divine reason. Implied that Kerry's the anti-christ, hastening the end-times.

Very scary, scary people.

('Course, I could just be the voice of the devil trying to get you all confused, so take it with a grain of salt.)

32. No, as I recall
they had two Bush supporters, one Kerry supporter, another Bush supporter, and then an "independent" who went on a wild rant about Jews and gays and Millennial Jews and made even less sense than any of them. I may be forgetting somebody, but I think that was all of them. It was on ATC yesterday at about 5:30pm EST.

The Kerry supporter sounded like an older African American man - he may have identified himself that way also.

But what a bunch of kooks. Like I said, NPR could have gotten more cogent and relevant remarks at their nearest steam grate. Why bother?
