Uh-yup, I done looked it up: comes from "gravite" back when some guy name Norm took over England and ran the place for a few centuries.

3. It came into English through a French word
If you want to get picky, we can say that it's traced to Proto Indo-European...

It's just funny how the French-haters leave themselves open.
