Country before Party
Well, it's an election year, and it's coming down to the wire. Soon we'll go to the polls and decide who becomes the next leader of the free world. Unfortunately though, people in the deep South and Texas will also get to vote, which is especially disasterous at this time because it just may lead to Bush getting re-elected.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I am no fan of the 'Dubya. But that wasn't always the case. This is the first election in which I'm old enough to vote, and I registered as a republican (I registered before all hell broke loose in Iraq, in case you're wondering). So it's kind of ironic that I'm a registered republican and yet I'm almost certainly going to vote for Kerry. Why vote for Kerry, you ask? Well the answer is quite simple: He's more qualified to be president then Bush.

Lets take a quick look at the facts. First off, there's the home front. In 2000, We had a multibillion dollar surplus and a booming economy. By the time Bush took office, the economy had gone down quicker then an origami display at a chili-cook off. Now I'm not blaming Bush for the economy going down the toilet. He's not responsible for that, at least not directly. The economy was brought down by a double whammy of the 9/11 attack on the world trade center and the wheeling and dealing of CEO's at companies like Enron finally catching up with them. What Bush is reponsible for is not bringing the errant CEO's to justice for cheating their employees out of their 401k money and any chance of retirment in less than 40 years. Also, in the wake of the recession, he has done little to create any new jobs, and the few new jobs that have been created are menial jobs that pay the bare minimum wage.

Also, Let's consider Bush's actions in the War on Terror. It's late 2001, and the U.S. army has Bin Laden and his cronies holed up in Tora Bora. Does he send in U.S. troops, the most well equipped and best trained in the world? Or does he outsource the job to a bunch of Afgan warlords who all probably hate eachother and couldn't even collectively put a pie in the oven? Answer: He chose the latter, practicall holding the door open for Bin Laden to escape. Because of Bush, Bin Laden is still a free man. Then, as if do distract our attention from the failure in Afganistan, Bush pretty much gives the United Nations "the finger" (While pretty much pissing of the rest of the world in the process), and sends our troops to a diversion in Iraq, even taking troops out of Afganistan, thus making it more likely that we would be unable to capture Bin Laden.

His justification for the war in Iraq was that Iraq was harboring weapons of mass destruction and may have even had ties to al-qaeda. So, after we kick some Iraqi butt and start looking around for the famed WMD's and an al-qaeda connection, we find out that there are none, Just like Hans Blix and the U.N. inspectors told us. Meanwhile, almost a year after a symbolic statue demolition and Bush prancing around on an aircraft carrier while dressed as a pilot while declaring "mission accomplished", our troops are still dying every day in what has proven to be a meaningless diversion from the real war on terror.

Why would Bush do this, you ask? Why would Bush let Osama Bin Laden get away, and then waste out troops in Iraq? The answer is simple. The Bush family and the Bin Laden family are business buddies via Dick Cheney's old Oil company, Haliburton. And when you factor in that Bush Sr. was unable to get rid of Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf war, Dubya's actions make sense. Basically, he cares more about money and pocket books of his family then about the War on Terror or about the welfare of the citizens of the Untited States.

So, why vote for John Kerry? Because He's not George W. Bush, that's why. Because he can be trusted. Sure, he's a snooty rich guy, but Bush is rich as well, and Kerry's money is primarrily non-oil based, and as far as I know, he has no connection to the Bin Laden family what so ever. Which one would you trust to fight the war on terror and bring the perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks to justice?

Even when I point these things out to people, they tell me that they don't like Kerry because he's an intellectual, and they trust Bush because he's a regular guy, just like them. Then I ask them if they think that they would make a good president of the United States, and they usually tell me no, and that it would be too much for them to handle. So then I ask them "So if Bush is a regular guy like you, what makes you think he can handle it?"

So in this election, I, the republican, am putting my country before party and voting for John Kerry. I ask that you do the same.

1. Sounds like what Republicans used to be like

Certainly could deal if this was our loyal opposition. Thanks.

4. "Welcome to DU!"
Well, my dad was a republican, and for a long time he had me convinced it was the best party. Let's just say that recently I've had a grand revelation along the lines of: "Whoa! Bush is an idiot! And Kerry seems sensible! Perhaps he would be a better president..."

10. I'm just asking because I was a Republican when I was younger, too.
It's odd, but when I had no money, I was a Republican. Now that I'm doing O.K., I'm a Democrat...

3. "I'm almost certainly going to vote for Kerry."
*Almost certainly*?

After all that, there's still some doubt about
who you're voting for?

6. Hooray for a young person taking so much interest in politics!
Wish there were more like you. And I hope you really DO make it to the polls, unlike so many other young people.

Welcome to DU! And if you do vote for Kerry, rest assured you have made the best decision. You said, "Basically, he cares more about money and pocket books of his family then about the War on Terror or about the welfare of the citizens of the Untited States." I truly believe, with all my heart (and with sadness and disgust) that this is the case. The evidence is all there, as much as none of us want to believe that.

Welcome!

:hi:

Doesn't it bug you when people who don't vote complain about the state of the country? It bugs the hell out of me.

Welcome to the Underground. Watch your step, it can get dark down here, in one of the last places of sanity left in this nation.

11. Great Introduction
Nice way to sum up so many thoughts of people who need to be turned away from the dark side.

If you recruit 5 of your republican friends, you'll get a toaster.

Just ask Skinner!
