I'm nervous about Edwards! A lot is riding on him
We have a lot of momentum now but the bushies are ready for a final desperation stunt tomorrow. Edwards has to be good, really good.

Cheney is a pretty strong debater. He easily defeated Joementum in 2000. I pray Edwards can leave with a decisive victory like Kerry did with bush.

I'm nervous. This is going to be one hell of a debate.

:scared::scared:

5. It's the media and these damn polls
keeping it close. I wouldn't be surprised if someone was fudging the number but I can't handle this stress anymore haha.
I really just hope our momentum can keep up. I have faith in our ticket.

29. Listen to me. I'm from North Carolina. Edwards will.............
cut off Cheney's head and sh*t down his neck..... metaphorically speaking.... debate-wise, of course. I've watched this guy and he's good. That's why he was chosen for the ticket.

It'll smell like napalm in the morning.

It smells like.......................Victory!

2. gop is building this one up because they think cheney is better than bush
at debating, and maybe he can "win". The VP debate is NOT really that important.

Everything evildick is not.

The contrast between the two will be so obvious even the most kool aide inebriated wrong wing radicals will not be able to deny it.

Hope is on the way!!!!

Shine some positive, supportative, confident energy toward John Edwards.
He is about to inspire you and make you proud to be an American, again.

11. Edwards cannot be compared to Jomentum
Edwards is dynamic. Lieberman is as exciting as a dust ball in the corner.

Edwards should be able to hold his own with Darth Cheney.

7. I've been on edge for four years.
But relax.

First, Edwards has made a living going up against these corporate types. He knows what he's doing.

Second, there's nothing you can do right now that would make Edwards' performance better or worse. It's his moment.

And finally, don't let the media convince you that this is a make-or-break moment for Kerry Edwards. This is a great opportunity to solidify our support, but remember -- if VP debates were that influential, we'd be talking about President Dukakis and VP Bentsen today.

12. "He easily defeated Joementum"
because Jo was a bonafide idiot. He selfishly went into a debate with thoughts of himself and gave no thought to the fact that he's there to protect his guy (Gore). He walked into that debate wanted to be friends and play nice with Dr. Death. Give me a break. Jo GAVE the debate to Cheney. I just hope Cheney is not that lucky this time, and has a challanger that's there to do battle, in a reasoned way.

that is the one that we have to win to have a shot at winning. kerry doesn't have to be great, he just has to make sure he has his facts down cold.

16. I think
the pressure is all on Cheney. Bush totally flubbed the debate the other night and made their policies out for what they really are. Now Cheney has to stave the blood flow. It's much more important for Cheney to fix what Bush broke than for Edwards to do well (even though he will).

The VP debate ultimately makes little difference in the people who watch the debates. It's sandwiched between the first and last two debates. By the time the last two presidential debates happen, people will have long forgotten what happened in the VP debate. The pressure is all on Cheney. The Joementum has swung back in our favor.

17. his real message
I believe the strong appeal from the North Carolina senator is his clear message of maintaining a strong and economically active middle class. Middle class tax cuts, programs for paying for college tuition, and a focus on middle class values is important for America. Edwards may be able to mentioned this message that made him a hit in the primaries during his debate with Cheney. This message and policy focus indeed will benefit Edwards for a 2008 or 2012 bid for the White House.

19. Stop It
You all sound like my mother!!

It is going to be fine, Edwards isn't going to get stage fright or suddenly start acting like a weeny like Joe Lieberman. He argued in courtrooms as a young, solo attorney up against teams of corporate lawyers. He knows how people like Dick Cheney think. Stop worrying. That's an order!!!

21. You can't compare this with Lieberman.
Unless Edwards purposely throws the debate, it won't be like the Lieberman debate.

(has Cheney ever had a serious public debate before?)

Anywho, Edwards will easily win in the likeability contest. That's probably the most important part with voters.

As for the issues, Edwards has got him there too. Have you ever seen Edwards speak? (I suspect most DUers haven't). He's better than Kerry.

Sure, Cheney's got experience. But it's experience in getting his employers exclusive contracts, hiding, and lying to the American people.

but a tortoise on valium could have run rings around him. All he could do was agree with Darth Cheney! "You've got a good point there", "I know what you're saying" blah blah blah. He may have his good points, but he's hardly a committed leftie.

30. I am too - much more nervous about Edwards than Kerry
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 06:10 PM by secular_warrior
I knew Kerry could handle the pressure - he's "the closer" and an excellent debater. He has the experience and the gravitas.

I like Edwards, but didn't want him to be chosen for VP because of moments like these. He has little political experience and is not as good a debater as Cheney. In the primaries Edwards was roughed up a few times by the likes of Russert and Matthews. Edwards' grasp of policy issues worries me a little. his shaky answer to a debate question during the primaries about DOMA comes to mind. I just know Cheney will be coming at him on complex policy questions, to try to make Edwards the new Quayle.

I hope Edwards proves me wrong. I'm just afraid he's going to look like a lightweight next to Cheney. Edwards can't try to tangle with Cheney on heavy policy points. He has to methodically make the case against Cheney, then put him away.
