Update on Crawford newspaper-How our efforts are helping!
Just got this email from the Crawford paper--

At last count (this morning) we had gone from 425 down to 396, then up to 531. We still have bunches and bunch to input, so that
number is growing. Thanks a million for all your support. We wouldn't still be here without you.

Melanie

1. I bow to you
unfortunately right now I truly cannot afford to do give anything. Once I am able to, I may just give a straight donation.

;-)

It is CRITICAL to keep indy media going

18. It is a damn shame when one can lose a business by telling
the truth. I will send money as I can. Having only social security as an income can be numbing.

7. I called and ordered a subscription and told them to send it
to doc/dentist/library office; I told the lady I would really like for them to send it to someone in Crawford who would like the paper but maybe couldn't afford it. I left it up to her. Very nice lady and she said they have had many calls. DU'ers are great people.

6. Even though the subscrition numbers are up...
They have probably lost a lot of advertising. So a little "donation kick' could help!

10. Absolutely - any small donation!!
I ordered a subscription myself (didn't need the newspaper do what they are doing is taking the new subs Dems are ordering and giving them to local libraries in Texas) but the woman who answered said lots of people are donating just $5 or $10 and she said the response has eben great! They especially like the little messages people send in with their donation :)

I told her that we'd spread the word and asked her to thank the entire staff for doing what they thought was right! :)

So yes, they accept even small contributions from PayPal (just add a nice note if you have a sec).

12. One-year sub is $45
I already posted this but if you DON'T need a sub to the paper but want to "order" one anyway, they will donate the sub to local libraries in Texas.

20. I have an idea!! If some of us can only donate, not subscribe..
.. perhaps it would be a better idea to ask the newspaper to pick a worthy charity that would like to use the advertising space our non-subscription donations would fund???? That would give them an ad spot filled, and give something good to a worthy cause. Perhaps whomever is in touch with them can suggest that? I'm sure it makes them a bit uncomfortable to take straight donations, seeing that they are a business.

Anyone with connections at Airamerica radio? I wasn't kidding when I said we should shoot for 10,000 subscriptions. The power of the internet.

28. Check out this editiorial today:
http://news.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Editorial/editorial40.htm

snip-

The Iconoclast received considerable criticism this past week
after its editors endorsed John Kerry for President. Several subscriptions and advertisements were canceled after the newspaper hit the stands Tuesday morning.
-snip

snip-
We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.
-snip

snip-
In the past, when individuals disagreed with an editorial, they would write a letter to the editor politely expressing a different point of view in contrast to the views of the publishers, which we have usually published. Occasionally someone would cancel a subscription or an ad, but this was rare.
-snip

snip-

Several young members of our staff covering Tonkawa Traditions this past weekend were angrily harassed and threatened that they must leave, which cut short their ability to fully do their jobs and instilled in them considerable fear for their safety. These reporters had nothing to do with that editorial. They were part-time college students working to pay their way through school and better themselves.
-snip

It goes on...How 'bout that "compassionate conservatism"???
