Edwards is doing okay, but he's not effectively defending his and Kerry's record against Cheney's strong attacks. He's much better at presenting his and Kerry's program, but his attacks are not quite as hard hitting as Cheney's. I would say Cheney is winning, but not by much.

Between Cheney getting ALL the talking time, and Edwards having to defend Kerry in the few bytes he did get, it was sounding to me like Edwards was trapped. Reading the threads seems like JE may have hit his stride, though. I just hope the average viewer/voter hadn't already made their mind up and turned it off, like I did.

with respect, I think that to say Cheney is winning indicates either 1) typical Democrat defeatism 2) a touch of nerves, because so much is on the line, or 3) somebody on this board is high on PCP. Edwards killed Cheney on Cheney's record:

"He voted against Head Start.
"He voted against banning plastic weapons that can pass through medical detectors.

"He voted against 'Meals on Wheels' for Seniors.

"He voted against a holiday for Martin Luther King.

"He voted against a resolution calling for the release of Nelson Mandela."

Cheney couldn't respond, and didn't even try.

Eifel hitting hardball questions like that opening one (actually a GOP talking point) didnt help...seemed to throw Edwards off right off the bat..putting him on the defensive, and he sidestepped the question, too, which was pretty obvious....

Edwards doesn't have to win, but he does have to put in a good, credible performance. He has to hold his own. Undecided voters have to see that he would be capable of taking over if need be, and I think that he's done that, especially on domestic issues. Remember, in the focus groups for the Kerry/* debate, many undecided voters were very focused on domestic issues, where Edwards shines.

That is if people are still watching. Cheney is so dull and the sit-down format makes things worse.
