NYT says Des Moines Register to endorse John Edwards tomorrow...
http://nytimes.com/2004/01/11/politics/campaigns/11DEMS.html?pagewanted=2&hp

To muddy matters more, Democrats said it has been increasingly clear that any success by Senators Kerry and Edwards at coming in second or third could draw votes from Mr. Gephardt or Dr. Dean, pulling them out of first place. That dynamic has become particularly apparent with Mr. Edwards, who is making a concerted effort to draw votes from Mr. Gephardt, to the concern of Mr. Gephardt's advisers and to the delight of the Dean camp.

And Mr. Edwards was expected to receive a big lift from the endorsement of The Des Moines Register in its Sunday edition.

1. Wow
Edwards is going well in Iowa, I noticed that when I was there. Many people had him on their short list.

I talked to some very nice Edwards people at the Santa Cruz caucus today; they were thrilled to hear how well he's doing.

28. Be careful what you wish for
If Edwards takes a strong second (or first we're hoping) in Iowa, and builds momentum going into NH, wins South Carolina and wins or places second in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona then Edwards has a shot at winning this thing.

I wouldn't count him out at all. This thing is nowhere near a lock for Dean. I think Edwards is a much stronger national candidate than Gephardt, and if I were Dean I'd be much more concerned about that, then beating Gephardt.

46. I will
I will keep dreaming. Dreaming of a better America. Dreaming of a better economy, more jobs, increased safety, and all of the things John Edwards will give us as president.

If you don't think this scenario is plausible, you haven't been following this thing that closely. You have to win more than New Hampshire to get the nomination, as has been proved many times over.

45. Interesting
They hate him in NC? Is that why the latest NC poll shows 92% support for Edwards against GWBush?

And why do Dean supporters continue to say that JRE should go back to his senate seat in NC and wait 8 years so we don't lose the seat?

Sounds like inconsistency.

There was nothing inflamatory in my comments about Edwards possibilities to win the nomination. I wish you wouldn't bash Edwards with unfounded statements. His support continues to grow in Iowa and New Hampshire, places that are not his core constituency, and when the race turns to the South he will continue to pick up steam.

Be happy for your candidate, he's doing well, but please don't unnecessarily take out your anger on Edwards because he continues to gain support and has the possibility of winning.

Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 11:08 PM by HFishbine
'Cause this isn't clear:

"any success by Senators Kerry and Edwards at coming in second or third could draw votes from Mr. Gephardt or Dr. Dean, pulling them out of first place."

How does someone get pulled out of first by someone else coming in second? Is first place vacant if this happens? I'm confused.

17. That can't be right
Because the premise is "any success by Senators Kerry and Edwards at coming in second or third." They don't come in second or third if there are four guys with 20% each.

61. That was pretty great, alright.
I saw that too. Edwards really was on fire last night. Kucinich was in the zone also, and Kerry was at the top of his game.

If the Iowa race were to be decided solely on the basis of those performances, I'd have to call it almost a three-way tie between them. I would have to give Kerry a slight edge for really looking the part though. About mid-way through his speech I had the most eerie feeling that I was looking at the next President of the United States of America.

Any way you slice it, Dean looked like a distant fourth in that forum. He did suck his chin up into his neck and got red in the face and did the karate chop thing, and was in every way the Howard Dean we know and love so well, but in the presence of the other three, it came off looking like anger and indignation vs. passion and principle.

31. But...
If you're waking up to the Sunday newspaper tomorrow in Iowa still undecided, it gives you more to think about in terms of Edwards.

You won't hear people saying "I'm voting for Edwards because the Des Moines Register endorsed him", but if they read the article that will surely be part of the endorsement, you may walk away from the article saying "I didn't know this about Edwards, and I like these positions that they point out. I think I'll vote for him".

I honestly don't expect to get a singel dollar from DU until after Edwards places well in IA and NH. However, you all might surprise me.

...in not having yet completed a single term as Senator. I just don't see him getting over the hump, in terms of voter support with all the other candidates in the field. Can he point to anything in his record that is unique from the others?

52. His entire lifetime of fighting exactly what is going wrong with America
successfully on a retail level is pretty unique.

His optimism, his biography, his brilliant campaign strategy, freshness, committment, and refusal to take PAC and DC lobbyist money is unique. His relationship with his wife and her committment to democratic principles is unique. I think the way he looks, physically, is also kind of unique.

His vision is also unique.

There's no other candidate who has been able to explain precisely the problem in America, and has a plan to address thos problems, and then package it into a candidacy that has a real chance of winning.

...but does not really have a unique value proposition to voters. I admire his contributions in the courtroom, but he's had 6 years in the Senate- what has he delivered for the American people? He's got slick presentation skills, so if he can get in front of enough people, perceptions might change.

54. Bush had less experience. Clinton was a nobody. Carter? Nobody.
Bush I? Rewarded for service as VP.

Reagan was probably the most poltically experienced person elected president since Nixon, and what was that worth?

It's been a while since Americans have rewarded political experience when electing a president.

Notwithstanding your characterization as "slick", Edwards does have the ability to sell an idea to an audience. Fortunately, what he's selling is truth and justice.

We'll see where it takes him. I think it could take him to the white house.

59. One would think
that, as a Dean supporter, you would have more confidence in your candidate - who, after all (as we're constantly being told) is the front runner in this race. If you did, there would be no need for you to try to trash John Edwards in the wake of a very exciting endorsement.

One would also think that supporters of Mr. "Washington Insiders are all Worthless" would not be so quick to demean a candidate because he has not spent most of his adult lives in politics.

According to your standard, the only people qualified to run for president are career politicians who have limited their political careers to state and local politics. I guess that's why George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan were such fabulous presidents while JFK and Harry Truman - both of whom were former Senators who had never been state legislators or "chief executives" - proved so unqualified for office.

68. Confident to contrast
I'm confident enough in my candidate to contrast him with other candidates. I don't have anything against Washington candidates per-se, I DO have a problem with Washington candidates who talk about bold reform but did precious little in the decades they served in office. Their sudden boldness is not credible. "Career politicians" is a pejorative for someone who's served in office for a while- whether or not they deserve plaudits or criticism depends on whether they've used that time to accomplish anything or not.
